Default please, need suggestions from you audiophiles...

hey all,

i just "upgraded" my sound system but it's not sounding as good as i'd like. i decided to keep the factory head unit since i wanted to keep my dash controls. i kno this is probably my source of problem, but i want to see if there is any way around it. my highs are great, but when i turn it up, the bass distorts. i have adjust the bass for different volume settings and also different types of music. i orginally bridged outputs from the amp, but that just made things worse. keeping it 2 channels is a bit better. i've heard these speakers in the shop and other cars, and they're supposed to hit pretty deep. any suggestions would be great!

components that i installed:
> boston acoustics proseries components 6.5
> fosgate 300watt 4-channel amp

add a subwoofer. 6.5s generally have a real hard time putting out large amounts of bass without distorting, especially if they are trying to reproduce mids as well.

Ive got a '01 silverstone - there's at least one other silverstone in town. which would you be?

I had pro-series 6.5s in my integra a few years back, and they didnt have satisfying bass without the sub... You could try raising the gain on the amp and not turning the tuner up as loud to get around the distortion in the head unit.

Take a look at WLaurent's 8" sub enclosure - it takes up a minimum of space. I'll be wiring mine up this weekend if ya need to take a look at em...

Holman, this is a really hard question to answer over the Internet. My best suggestion is to see if you can find someone local to assist you in tuning your setup.

Here are a couple of suggestions.

Turn the bass control to 0.
Tune the volume on the radio to 0.
You should have a level converter to go from speaker level to line level, turn that to 0. If you have the speaker levels going right into the amplifier, turn you amplifier level to min.
adjust your radio level to about 75%.
Slowly start to adjust the level converter or the amplifier level up.
Once you start hearing distortion back the level converter or amplifer gain back about 1/8.
Now when you listen to the radio, never go above 75% on the volume control.

Best I can suggest without being able to listen to it.

A sub will definitely assist you.

Good luck.

does your amp have a high pass filter on its inputs? You could probably do with cutting off input beneath say 55 to 60 Hz to the front channels reduce distortion for the 6.5" components.

Yup, here you go....I am pretty sure this is your amp, the switch all the way on the left, just to the right of the gain, flick that to HP....that should cure the problem
