Now that I have the PAC SWI-X from Lucid, I'm ready to finish off my audio system. I'd really like to get the JL Audio 500/5 amp, but would also like to keep my spare tire. I checked the measurements from JL's website and got out the tape measure. It looks like it would BARELY fit mounted on a panel beside the spare. I measured about 20" from the driver's side trunk support arm thing (name?) to the spare tire. Tough to get an exact measurement because the tire is round (duh!). Height doesn't seem to be a problem. Nobody stocks this amp in town so I can't test fit. Anybody tried it?
I'm guessing that it will not fit...I have a 300/4 and it was close at best....check the dimensions as compared to the 500/5....I think the 500/5 is about 6" longer....I'm sure it does not fit....nice amp though.
JL Stealthbox and 300/4-decided to go on top of the Stealthbox...the cover is just low enough to allow the mounting of the amp on top....this makes the amp the same level as the trunk floor.....not as stealth as a spare tire install....but no heat problems or issues with loosing the tire or mount hardware for the tire....works OK for my tastes.
Boston seperates mounted stealthy in the door panels
...and a new Alpine 7894...no pics yet....love it all
Not sure if this'll help you but here are some pic's of my JL 500/5 install: Tif's pics
I did briefly try and wedge the amp over the gas tank but IIRC it protruded too far into the trunk to allow the left had trim panel to be refitted. I also needed space to mount the passive crossovers for the speakers and also the fuses, distribution blocks etc. so I ditched the spare in favour of tyre foam
I decided to just buy what I wanted and then worry about making it fit. Thanks to Tif I know it will fit if I lose the tire (which I REALLY don't want to do). Here's what I bought: Alpine 7995 HU, Focal components for the front (already have them and can't remember model #), Kenwood 6 1/4" speakers for the rear (already have them and can't remember the model #) JL Audio Stealthbox, JL Audio 500/5 amp, and PAC SWI-X which will change to the DJ Cube super-duper controller if he ends up making them.
Tif, is there an advantage to having your crossovers where you have them? Mine are already in the doors.
Thanks to everyone for all your help including Matrix, Macgyver and others.
The amp and stealthbox had to be ordered, so it may be a week or two before I get the whole works installed.
Nice setup! The 500/5 and stealthbox are a great combo
There isn't any great benefit in having the cross overs where they are but with the Focal crossovers supporting bi-wiring (with 2 sets of inputs) I wanted to keep the signal run from the amp to them as short as possible. Aside from that I like to be able to look at them
