You'll want the iPod somewhat accessible if yours is like mine. Once in a while (maybe once a month) it needs a reset and you have to handle it directly to do that.
Interesting -- I've never had to reset mine. It lives full time in the secret compartment.

Ya I had my ipod in the mesh net when my car got broken into a few weeks ago and they didn't even take it. Not exactly glaringly obvious especially with a black case.

There is an opening behind the pannel towards the firewall above the net, just shove the wire up there and with th HU out you can see it back there and reach to get it.

Likely going to pick up an Alpine HU and hook in one of the iPod cables. I was thinking of running the cable down to the netting in the passenger footwell. Is it a pretty straight and direct path out the back of the headunit into that area?

Normally I'd just run it into the cupholder or glovebox, but the cupholder is already way too small and the glovebox would need to have a hole drilled or whatever.
You can get the cable in to the glove box without drilling and without removing all the stuff that some of the threads on here indicate as necessary. I had second thoughts also after reading all the stuff some people removed to get into the glove box. All you really need is a philips screw driver and tiny fingers. By doing this you can safely lock your ipod in the glove box and leave it there.

I removed the screws towards the bottom of the glove box only and the center console just pulls up. The alpine units come with a usb to ipod connector that is shorter and connects to the longer extension. I just fed the smaller USB end of the cable through the opening around the hinge. It did take some force, but it will go. Next you feed the short cable in until the ipod connector is up against the opening. Next you pull up on the bottom of the glove box with your left hand and fish for the connector with your right (tiny fingers required. I thought mine might have been stuck up there once!). Once I got the usb end just outside I was able to connect it to the extension cable that had been run up the center console and then tuck it back under. Pull the slack back on the ipod connector and now you can clip your ipod under the elastic strap on the glove box lid. Put the screws back in and pop the snaps on the center console back down with a closed fist and your done. The door still closes fine with the wire in the opening around the hinge as the opening is more then big enough.

Admittedly, the only problem is that the USB interface is irretrievable for use with flash drives or hard drives unless you go fishing again. However since artwork cannot be displayed unless you use an iPod, I only intend to use my ipod anyways.
