stupid question: can ANY aftermarket cd deck use the s2k's stock dash controls?
sorry, didn't find anything in the search. i'm going to get an 03-04, but the first thing i will do is replace the stereo into something that rocks.
just wondering if i do, will the dash controls become obsolete? if not, what needs to be done?
thanks!

A few options...
1) PAC SWI-X IR repeater from any local Circuit City/Best Buy/etc. (not recommended)
2) DCI made by modifry and sold by Lucid
3) Control mod by DJ_Qube

DJ's mod will work on any head unit because he uses your factory remote as the basis for the mod. It's more money than the Lucid DCI and a little harder to install but gives you extra functions because he replaces the MODE switch with a 4-way switch (looks stock though). Makes for a nice custom solution. If I had Qube's web site I'd give you a link (anybody?).
The DCI from Lucid installs pretty easy since it's only wiring, no changing of the dash panels, but it's limited (currently) to Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, Panasonic, Eclipse, Blaupunkt, and Clarion. It also gives you additional functions by way of pressing more than one switch at a time. Lucid's site is here and mine is here . I have a little more info on how it works but you have to buy it from Lucid.
It used to be the PAC unit was the only option and people put up with it's limitations and quirks, but for the most part we only hear complaints about it compared to the other two solutions we have available.

I looked at the DJ Cube option, and was really impressed. The issue I ran into was that his option canabalizes the HU's remote control. If you still want to use the remote, you have to buy another one. My Sony HU has functions that exist ONLY on the remote so that would have been a problem for me.
I went with the lucid DCI specific to the Sony and it is very cool. The button combo thing took a little while to get used to, but it works and works well. Add in the speed sensitive volume control and it is sweet.
