sub amp sometimes turns off
Ive got an s2k with alpine hu 9851, dls up6 components. one small alpine amp putting about 110w rms or so each. Then for sub I have 1 10w6v2 powered by an alpine mrp-650 i would say im running about 500wrms to the sub.
Anyways on to the problem, I have amps gain so that I hit my max volume at about 25 on the hu. When I go this high and even sometimes around 23, 24 my sub amp will just cut out. It wont go back on unless I turn the radio off then on again and works
perfectly once again, what could be going on here??
Any help or input would be appreciated.

The amp is going into protect mode....
Caused by:
Improper wiring (wrong Ohm...most probable)
Overheating (possible)
shorting (improbable)
Being overpowered (too much current draw...possible)
Severe Clipping (possible)
Check all those things out. Turn down the gain and see whats happening.

ive got it in a 2ohm load, the sub is a dual 4ohm and its either 2ohm or 8 ohm so i dont think that could be it.
cant be overheating because it will happen as soon as it is turned up.
not clipping. I use multimeter to do gains. which the amp did fine when the amps for high were not in use so i could tune.
but tell me more about the current draw problem. I have 4 awg going through the car. I had an mtx 801d which used the wire but recently got the new alpine amp and it will only accept down to 8awg. so I had to solder the 4-8awg connection but I dont see that being too much of a problem but it may be?
thanks for the help!

Check you ground and power leads to ensure they are making good connections.
Does this happen with the car running or when the car is off?
Make sure the voltage at the amp is the same as you are reading at the battery. Should be somewhere around 13.8 to 14.2 with the car running. If you notice the voltage dropping significantly (< 12 V with car running) when the bass hits you either have to much draw for the battery/alternator or a bad connection.
Also - when the amp shuts off - how hot is it? Hot, but you can still hold your hand on it. Or, Center of the sun hot?

my little amp was acting up, kind of like that
It will play for a little while, then gets too hot and shuts off, if I turn it off and let it cool down, it plays for a little while.
The problem is that the fan on the amp is broken....

yeah, i don't have a lot to add but to chime in what's already been said.
-double check the voltage at the amp, and make sure it jives w/ what you have at the battery.
-also, check the amp and see if you've got any lights lit, etc.
-be sure you don't accidentally have speaker wires touching or something like that...
-use your meter to make sure the sub reads around 2 ohms resistance (ie, you don't have a voice coil shorting)
-double check grounds and connections.
it does sound like the amp is shutting down for protect reasons. doesn't look like the amp is fan cooled.
