If you think that is screwy, Sony's have both attenuation and a mute.

 

The "Mute" button on the Alpine CDA-7876 quiets the sound by 20 db. The "Interrupt" lead on the Alpine CDA-7876 wiring harness silences the sound AND pauses the CD. Thus the "Mute" button on the radio quiets the sound and the "Mute" button on the dash controls silences the radio and pauses the CD player.

Both definitions of "mute" (to muffle or to silence) are correct.
