Besides quicker spool, another benefit of ball bearing turbos is that they are water cooled. You don't have to worry as much about seizing up your turbo after running it hard. The oil doesn't cool it down, all it does is lubricate. The coolant is what keeps the turbo cool and therefore you don't have to wait as long for it to cool off before safely shutting the car off.
So how is coolant spliced into the turbo from the engine? Is there any drilling & taping involved? Thanks!

If 400 whp is the goal, along with fast response, is the GT3071R better or the GT3076R? What is the power and spool speed difference between these two turbos?

Btw, I noticed Garrett now makes a GT32 which is in between the GT30 and GT35 in size.

You can see them here:

My coolant is coming from the stock oil cooler lines.

The GT3076R is equivalent to a 60 trim T04E compressor on a Stage 3 T3 turbine. The 3076R WILL spool faster though.

The GT3071R is smaller, but is capable of up to 400 whp.

The GT35R is equivalent to a 62-1 compressor (or larger) on a Stage 3 or stage 5 turbine.

There are other things to consider. Do you track your car with any frequency? If so heat may be a concern and you may lean toward a supercharger setup. If you want the ultimate in streetable power, and you want about 350whp, these things are easily attainable with a GT30 turbo setup. Hell, you'll be close to 350whp on any of the base kits. Reliabilty tends to go down as you up boost so you may want to consider that. It's so difficult to resist the temptation to turn up boost with a turbo setup because you know more HP is just around the corner. I think if you resist that urge and get a good tune then a base turbo kit should suit you quite nicely.

Thanks for the input Courage. No i don't track at all. Just the odd high speed run down the empty highway at night and some sprited driving when i'm in the mood. I'm pretty confident that i'll be happy with around 350whp as I am just looking for similar performance as my M3 currently has, but outta an S2k. Also, reliability is always a concern for me as i really don't wanna have much downtime dealing with breakdowns and repairs.

Hmm...well, remember the S2000 weighs over 600lbs less than the E46 M3 Coupe. That's a lot of weight! You should be able to acheive the same power/weight ratio with less HP than your M3 current has. It sounds to me like a base turbo kit will definitely please you. They are terribly fast and produce more power everywhere on the power band. A quick glimpse at the 1/4 mile times of E46 M3's reveals a range between 13.1 - 14 seconds or so...you'll exceed those times with a turbo S2000 pretty easily.

Yes, the S2k is alot lighter, that makes it all the more fun in corners and such, but i just remember making the jump from the S to the M3 and the amazing change in straightline acceleration, it was amazing. Never really driven a car that had alot of torque before. I think a base turbo kit with a good tune will be exactly what i am after. Can hardly wait to sell the M3 and get into my next S2k!!
