All I did is to tap it but instead of using teflon tape, I threw on some perma-gasket for good measure. Though I have been schooled by JB many times.

People worry way too much about where the oil return is plumbed into the pan. Even if you plumbed it at the very bottom where it's completely submerged, you would have to be running a drain line that is too small for it to cause the oil to back up into the bearings...

Mine has been tapped into the factory oil drain slot since the beginning. No problems with that side of the setup.
