Grab the output shaft cups and shake them. If the have a ton of play the diff is shot. It's pretty obvious. There is some play in them stock, but they'll wobble like crazy when the caps shatter.

its prob the axle I did the same thing a few weeks ago jack it up and start the car put it in first and wait for the grinding...grab each wheel and try to stop it...if one stops you snapped an axle or if neither of them move its your diff

no, i'll inspect old one once i get car running again, worst case i have a spare diff, about half of the way done, if it stops raining, i'll finish tomorrow

actually, i'll go ahead and drain fluid when it dries up outside to see what comes out
