Has anyone experienced any overheating issues? I was sitting in traffic, a/c on, and then my car started blowing out hot air. I wasn't boosting at all during the 10 minute drive, but i saw the temp guage was at 4 bars (3 is normal for ap1). I immediately shut off a/c, and in like 30 seconds it went back to 3 bars. I was afraid to put a/c back on. It was about 102 degrees outside.

 

IDK about cheapest but there is a local guy who can get you a DBW kit for about 4300. That was cheaper than most places I found but of course he would like to charge you for install.

 

4300 is good but you know me and i like to install it myself

 

In an AP1, if your temp goes from 3(normal) to 4(normal, but slightly hot) the AC will shut off until the bars return to 3.

Do you have any grilles in front of your intercooler?

 

If you are OK with the GReddy kit, get a kit for the reg (non-DBW) AP2 (saves $) and sell the eManage unit to help pay for the FlashPro the DBW needs. Otherwise, the kits are almost identical. Lots more of them around to find, too.

 

Just the stock bumper grill, can't imagine it would block that much air.

 

the dbw kit sells for much less than the non dbw kit. now if your talking about used. yea there is more used kits but i want to buy new.

 

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have a Greddy turbo CARB sticker laying around they don't need? I bought an used kit and it didn't come with the CARB sticker. I'm gonna try to contact Greddy this week, but I'm not expecting much help since I bought the kit 2nd hand.

are the 550s high impediance or low?

 

Mine overheated similarly a few weeks ago. I sat for 15 minutes in almost dead stop traffic, A/C on, 90 degrees & sunny. It happened really fast - temps shot from three bars to six. I immediately pulled off the road, shut it down, and popped the hood. After a few minutes, some coolant puked out of the top of the overflow reservoir and I turned on the ignition to see the red bar (seven?) light up on the gauge. Then it finally cooled down.

It's been fine since, and I vented my hood the next weekend. I don't ever want to have that experience again. I've got an OCD-level fixation with my temp gauge now... Personally I'd suggest that a vented hood should be mandatory with a turbo.

Edit, 9/13/2010 - I just discovered that my driver's side radiator fan was not plugged in. This must have been disconnected by a repair shop who worked on my car last year. Thus the overheating was probably more due to having just one fan running than due to the turbo adding heat.

I also experienced what you're describing with the A/C. Just a few days ago (with the vented hood) I noticed that my A/C was blowing lukewarm air on a 94-degree sunny day. I had driven for about 10 minutes, then parked the car (off) for a few minutes, then started it and pulled up to a light. After sitting there for a minute, I noticed that the air was getting warm. Since the temp gauge was still at 3 bars, I left the A/C on to see what would happen.

Once the light turned and I got moving, the air remained warm until I hit 55 mph or so. Then it suddenly started blowing nice cold air again. My guess is that even with a vented hood, there's heat soak in the A/C lines when the car isn't moving. Once enough airflow had taken place, everything cooled off.
