how much room where spare tire goes
I'm currently a few hundred miles away from my car (in the military) and am trying to piece together a nice stereo system for when I get back. Got my head unit and component speakers picked out, as well as a small 4 channel to drive all of them, now I am looking to add just a little bass to the car.
2 options are a powered slim sub setup that a few companies sell for the 150-250$ range, normally really low power, and normally only play down to the 40-50hrz level. Placement hear will either be under the front seats (I know its tight) or in the trunk (where spare tire goes, AAA will take care of towing).
Other option is to build a custom box to go in the hole where the spare would be, I've seen a few, and they are plenty deep, and wide enough to get even pair of 10's in there, or low pro 12's staggered at the corners. But how tall is this opening, anyone feel like running to the garage and measuring it for me so I can see what my options are here, because this is really what I want to do, because I can get alot more power than these pre set up subs have, and alot cheaper (thats the main reason).
As for what I listen to, its a combination of everything, I like bass, but I hate overpowered systems. I like clean crisp full range sound. I am coming from a 95ls400 with the factory nakamichi stereo and I think an 8 inch sub in the rear decklid, open air (sort of if you consider the trunk as not a sealed box) setup. I think only about 90 watts made it to the sub and it was enough for me. In the aftermarket world, I ran a 8 inch bazooka on I think a pioneer 200watt 2 channel bridged for the longest time, and it was enough in every vehicle I put it in.
So as for the questions.
How much room is back there where the spare tire goes.
And how much power do you think I'm going to need to give me about the same amount of bass?

This is what I was planning to use if I ever get around to fixing up my busted ass stereo system. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-2009-HO...ht_1794wt_1255
Here are links to info and examples for installing an amplifier in your spare tire area:

As for the sub, I highly recommend 2big4aS2000's custom footwell sub boxes. I bought one from him several years ago and it has performed flawlessly. With your amp installed in the spare tire area and the sub in the footwell, you don't lose any trunk space. I'm only running 200W RMS to the sub, and that's more than enough for the small cabin. Check out the last link in my sig for info on footwell sub.
