I bought Tamadrummer's old AP2; drove it home and very pleased with the car. The exhaust is Apex'i WS2 w/ test pipe and removed resonator. I've decided it is a bit too loud for me. The exhaust sounds good around town but at 4KRPM on the hwy for hours it gets to be a bit much and its hitting 110+ on the db meter.
Would I see a reasonable reduction in the sound if I had a muffler shop put a resonator back on it or would I be better off looking to swap it for another exhaust?

 

You might want to look into Vibrant resonator. One of my friends had the muffler shop welded two of those on his 76mm exhaust, the noise volume dropped significantly and it didn't mess with the drone.

 

Sort of an aside, but whatever dB meter you are using is probably way overestimating the sound. If it's on your phone it means nothing because they aren't calibrated to the phones mic.

Regardless though, 110 dB is very, very, very loud and will damage your hearing quickly if you are exposed to it for hours over and over.

 

I doubt 110db is accurate unless you're driving with the top/windows down and exposing the meter to wind noise at highway speed and combining it with all the noises a S2000 makes.

A resonator and cat install will help with the noise in any case. The WS is supposed to be quiet. So returning it to its factory design will result in quietness.

But...a used stock exhaust is much cheaper, looks 100X better (IMO), and is made from stainless. And its quiet...and designed to prevent drone.

I've used this race muffler on a couple of cars(V8) and a V6 that had a lot of drone when at cruising speed. One was also just as loud(or louder) inside as it was outside the car. This race muffler took away most of the drone and it took the edge of the exhaust. What it did not do was change the tone of the exhaust, so if you like the tone of your exhaust this is the first one I'd try. With nothing to burn out the tone and db's will not change over time like it can with a muffler that has packing that will burn out over time. But if you put it on it will lower the db's by around 4 to 6 db and should cut most of the drone.

If your exhaust still has a lot of drone try the Moroso, mount it as far forward as possible. Like I said it will not change the tone, just dial down the volume a little and it took care of the bad drone my cars had.
