Default Shift Knob Problems

Hey guys,

So I'm in the process of changing my shift knob from a metal one to one that is either leather or resin based. However, as I was trying to get the knob off I noticed there is no locking nut on there. I go to twist it, and it turns, but it feels like the whole shifter is turning. It will only turn about half a turn then get stuck. I'm not sure how to remove it. Any ideas?? Thanks.

Vince

use a wrench. with wrench hold the bolt, while twisting bolt turn knob in opposite direction. It will feel like you shifter is moving but the knob is on tight. It will come loose.

Naw my locking nut is no longer there, I checked for it last time I attempted to get it off. That's what I'm trying to figure out. The knob sits about 3/4" lower than stock

So the knob that is currently stuck on your shifter doesn't have a lock nut on it? Just grab that ish with both hands and twist counterclockwise. Hopefully the person that put it in there didn't use loctite or something similar.

I believe he did cause I used a massive amount of force to get it off and it only turned like a quarter turn before getting stuck and not moving....I guess my next option is heat...

I'd remove the shifter, it'll be a pain with the knob still on but they'll be less risk damaging something (shifter, interior surfaces, fingers). Once you get it off you'll probably have to rethread the shifter, easier done off the car. Regrease the shifter when reinstalling while you're at it.

Yeah I may just cut the boot off replace the shifter, knob, and boot all at the same time.

If it is the stock boot, then take the center console off as much as you can. The top of the boot is actually formed with a little zip-tie at the top, at least mine is. Cut the zip-tie and see if it opens up enough to get it off with the knob still on.
