Same here. My star specs when I ran the civic were good until the compounds started to change/delaminate and that was around below 2-3/32"

The performance on my Dunlop Z1*s had fallen off drastically by the time they were 2 years old and worn to about 4/32". I think it's more likely that they had worn down to a different compound than that the rubber had gotten hard with age. Putting on a new full tread set was a big improvement.
That's about right. When they get to 4/32" tread they're not all that great for autox anymore. I took them out to the track recently and they were fantastic for having fun (still gripping, no drifting); just not good enough for autox competition.
I respectfully disagree. My 2-3/32nd SS's did just fine at Nats.

Maybe the concrete at Lincoln helped? I have noticed significant grip drop-off around 4/32" on the asphalt we drive on locally as well as daily driving on the street. Do you use your tires for daily driving or competition only? Also did you wear them down that far or were they shaved? Maybe ours heat cycled out?

I'm not so sure that's really a different experience. What one person calls worn to 4/32", someone else might call 2/32". First, the two main grooves are 2/32" deeper than the secondary grooves. Second, the tires don't wear perfectly evenly and the edges may be worn through to the base compound even when the two main grooves are still deep enough to have grippy compound on either side of them.

Surface has a big effect on how much performance loss you experience with old tires. Gravelly asphalt is the worst, concrete is the best.

here's the fact about dunlops - measurements aside. They are dual compound tires. If you get down to the second layer, they suck.

My findings as well. Also as you get down to the second compound, right before it switches between the two, the tires seem to delaminate a little as well.

I think this thread is out of control because this is at least the second time we've covered this topic. There have been other topics covered more than once as well. I think there needs to be an Autocross forum section under Racing and Competition with subtopics of Autocross FAQ, Stock Class, STR, Events (i.e. National Tours) etc where this could all be collected up and and organized. That way it would be easy to find a topic on tires or star specs or what ever rather than this one big bucket that is getting unwieldy. Who can make this happen? Steve? Charles?

My first and only experience with Star Specs... "The grip of star specs shaved to 4/32 went away very fast compared to what one would expect. They also shreaded/peeled. Star specs that are not shaved last a long time and don't have this issue." The peel/delamination may be more pronounced when shaved for some reason.

I think this is what everyone is referring to. You can see the peeling and two compounds. As to what tread depth this started it's hard to tell. From my experience this is an unusual construction as other tires seem to have the "carcus" start on a smooth surface rather then where there is still tread.

This photo posted at least once before.

Woot! KW clubsports have arrived! Hardrace camber joint on order. Awaiting Gendron bar with added spherical mounts to come in this week. Will be ordering 12K springs to go on the front soon so I'll be running 670/550 setup. Recaro Profi XL seat should be in today or tomorrow. Will hopefully have shocks, swaybar and seat mounted up before Sunday's Evolution school in Marana AZ!

The major parts I Still need include
wheels & tires (have oem wheels with new 215/245 Kuhmo XS I'm going to wear down first)

I retired my moderator hat, so I deny everything.
