once upon a time, mercedes made big-ass luxo cruisers....the racing world revolved around alfas, bugs, masers and the occasional upstart ERA.....then der furher chipped in a few zillion marks..and BLAMMO!!!...the silver arrows ruled the [racing] world....not to mention what benz has done in the last few years...don't discount these guys..when they want to produce a winning product, they will...no excuses, no bullshit, it's done.

the owners...well,that's quite another matter......

As I mentioned above, there's an interesting discussion of AMG racing cars and how they went on a crash-project to produce a winning car for the 1997 FIA GT series then dominated by Porsche and BMW, see:

http://www.symbolicmotors.com/framesets/page2.html

(click on the Mercedes CLK-GTR Works Sports Racing Car)

As the note says: "In retrospect, 1997 was a vintage year in GT racing. The caliber of the cars (Mercedes CLK-GTR, Porsche 911 GT1, McLaren Fl GTR and Panoz), teams (AMG, Porsche, BMW, GuIf-Davidoff, Konrad, Roock, Schnitzer, Dams and David Price), drivers and venues (on three continents) is unmatched in recent history. Three major manufacturers faced off with factory teams, and no secrets were made of their involvement, intentions or the extent of the resources that would be deployed in their campaigns to win."

For a look at the AMG factory, which looks like a hospital, with all the white-coated guys individually hand-building engines, see: http://www.neighbourhoodinter.net/m...ges/amgfactory/

It would be interesting to see what they could do if they'd take the same tack as Honda did with the S2K -- produce a light, uncompromising street car with their racing technology.
