RX7 or S2000
i absolutely LOVE the rx7, and i also LOVE the s2k.
both are great cars. s2k is like a race car right out of the box, so is the rx7.
i hate to say this on a s2000 board, but when you start modding the car, rx7 shines.

LMAO
never owned a 7 so i can't really say, but they do seem to have reliability problem. HOWEVER, it's a bit over hyped. some people thinks it's mandatory to rebuild the engine at every 60k miles or something.
average joe cannot take care of rx7 easily, however it's not all that bad if you take good care of it. i would do 'reliability mod' first if i owned one.

I've driven both and owned only one. Reason? Do a search on RX-7s on autotrader.com. Interestingly enough, an extremely high percentage have new engines and/or transmissions. Do RX-7 owners just enjoy replacing critical components or do they max their visas because their cars seem to have some inherent engineering flaws?
In a race on a track, I'd put my hard earned cash on the RX-7, drivers being equal. If I had to put my money on a car I knew would get me 100K trouble free miles, well, let's just say that I don't have a disposable income, I don't enjoy riding the bus and I don't own an RX-7.

I don't know what the fuss is about. The S2000 is a fun, convertible cruising car. The RX-7 is a fun, hard core sports car. They're very different, so comparing them so directly seems kind of odd.
A friend of mine who had a BPU Supra, sold it and got a S2000. He's only had for 2 months, and he's already getting rid of it. I like the car for cruising and fun factor, but it's not going to be anywhere near close a 400+HP BPU rx-7 or BPU Supra in terms of sheer performance.
And I agree that the whole thing on rx-7 reliability is way too exaggerated. Most of these cars were suffering from the slap on bolt on parts, bump up the boost syndrome. Owners weren't very knowledgeable on the cars before, and learned the hard way. However by now, most serious owners, pretty much know what to do and how to do it. Funny thing is, the BPU rx-7s that are making big horsepower 400+, are also the ones that are lasting the longest. Why? Because their owners are serious, and take the time to do such things as tune with a wide lambda O2.
Believe it or not, the vast majority of people still don't know what a wide lambda is, or understand the concept of air/fuel. These are the same people who go boom and wonder why.

Sportbike! Sportbike! Sportbike!
Yamaha R1. 16000RPM redline. Cheap! Sub-10 seconds. Faster than S2k in the twisties and faster than the RX-7 in straight. Great gas mileage. Looks hella cool. Super high tech.
I would keep the RX-7. You loose way too much money on bying a new car.
Plus, RX-7 is a beauty, while S2k isn't =) (In case you wonder why, see my earlier posting S2000 sucks. I have a love/hate relationship with my S2000)

R1 is a badass bike, though trying to jump on one right off the bat to outperform a car is asking for disaster. Obviously you don't own an R1....
