Air Box vs. Intake
I'll ditto Emil's suggestion Look down on the forums to "Group Buys" and find the AUT intake. It is great. I've got one also.
Here's the problem in brief summary. Our s2ks have the radiator taking up all of our grill area. So there is no way to have any air intake on the sides of the radiator, like on my Mercedes Benz C 320. All of those "so called" cool air intakes that get their air from behind the radiatior (no matter how low behind) are just "hot air intakes" and "noise makers."
I run an AUT, plus a "side pipe" out the pax side of my gutted stock airbox to the hole in the pax side fender. I built a bit of an air scoop to direct air into the intake of the AUT, and sealed up the bottom of that unit. For my "side pipe" I equipped it with a very light aluminum flapper valve, so if the AUT and scoop ever go into "ram air" the pressure won't be lost.
With the exception of AUT type units, spoons, and side pipes to the Pax fender well, I have placed thermometers in just about all the places that these CAI sellers locate their intakes. In each case, the thermometer has broken at somewhere over 130 degrees. If you want cool air for your intake (and what s2k owner doesn't) There are only three ways. An AUT unit or something like it, a Spoon or something like it, or a gutted airbox and a "side pipe to the pax fenderwell.
There will be those who argue with me over this statement. But if they do, the question to ask is "does their CAI take in its air in front of the radiator, or behind it?"
If in front, it is a good option. If behind, it is snake oil.
Thanks,
Richard
