It indicates that you're starting the starter with the engine already running. Try it on a rental or beater so you can experience than nasty noise.

Well I figured that much...what I meant was,what exactly is going on to cause the grinding sound?

The starter motor has a solenoid that causes its gears to engage the gears of the flywheel. When you press the start button with the clutch in and the engine running, the starter gears grind against the moving flywheel gears. yuck
