Congrats Ron! I've had 0 problems with my 2001 s (except one that was due to stupidity and was not engine or transmission related).

Congrats Ron,

i also purchased a 2001 S2000 used just recently. don't let the pessimistic gloom sayers convince you that you made a poor choice or that all owners abuse their cars.... any car you buy (new or used) always has the small chance of being a bum apple (or lemon).

enjoy it! mine started today, ran fine, and i loved every moment of driving it.

PS: just as an fyi, i paid roughly what you did and elected to have the clutch replaced under TSB-0054 (i think) through the dealer. it cost me nothing and was well worth the time to reduce the in cabin noise. the old clutch was working fine with no mechanical problems.

I was driving to work this morning and I noticed what seemed to be a growling noise coming from the area of the transmission when I decelerated. I stopped at the Honda dealer near work and asked them to look at it.

Remember this is my first day of ownership and I am sick waiting to hear that what the problem was. I also had the fear that they would not cover it under warranty due to abuse(from previous owner).

When I did not hear from the dealer by 2:00 pm I called and the service tech said I need to check for you. A little earlier I noticed a bunch of people under your car looking at it.

Well when she returns she informs me that I needed a new clutch and pressure plate. My heart dropped until she said it is covered under warranty and since we need to keep it over night we will give you a free loaner.

I see many here have complained about Honda service but my first experience has left me quite impressed.

This is indeed great news. I'm sure that your car was exhibiting the typical clutch "buzz". Although it's nice that you are getting a brand new clutch, be it known that the buzz does not, in any way, hamper the function of the clutch. I've had the buzz since day 1 and the car is over 2 years old. I do not plan to have it fixed.

Why do you think they would replace both the clutch and pressure plate if all is well?

Remember, this is not a "recall". It is only a TSB (technical service bulletin). These are designed to take care of issues that are more "annoying" to the customer rather than serious mechanical problems. Honda has decided to do this work on the basis that some customers cannot stand that irritating clutch buzz noise.
It is not unlike an internal dash rattle or any other "non critical" issue. They do it to keep some customers happy. The only difference is that they know exactly what is causing the buzz so they can immediately initiate the "cure". Also be forewarned that many people have reported that some months after the clutch buzz work, the rattle comes back.
ps. Also consider yourself lucky. A PP is not normally part of this job.

Ron -

what you've described is exactly what TSB-054 covers...

if you read the TSB and the cause of the symptom - the problem is attributed to gear backlash noise, which exists in just about every gear application i've ever heard of... (i'm a Mechanical Engineer who does a lot of work with rotating machinery.) the new clutch is just more effective in dampening the noise. consider yourself lucky though, my dealership only replaced the clutch since it was the only part listed in the TSB -- congrats on the free pressure plate. i also took mine in and had no conflict with the dealer - i even called them on the phone to setup a ride along and told them of the problem. they greeted me at the door with the TSB in hand when i pulled up. one 3 minute ride later, and we were scheduling my replacement.

i have also read that some people report the rattle comes back. one of our local guys here in the NOLA area had this work done, and stated the problem came back. however, he stated it wasn't nearly as bad as the original noise.

can i ask Ron what was your mileage on the car? apparently it was still under oem warranty?

"I've had the buzz since day 1 and the car is over 2 years old. I do not plan to have it fixed." any particular reason why? or are you just saving till the last 100 miles of your warranty?
