Whichever you choose, get a better price! I know you are in a sunnier, more convertible friendly locale, but...
NEW 02's can be had in the northeast for <$30K. Local dealership has dropped to $29700 to get rid of '02's and they have a few 03's on the lot. Seen new '03's at $31Kin Chicago ad and suspect eventually will be ~$30K.
While you'll still see high asking prices, I've seen folk here having trouble here selling used 01's and 02's. 01's are being offered at <$26-27K, sometimes sold much lower.
An '01 has the plastic rear window, 2 less years of working the small bugs out, and 2 more years of depreciation ($4K+ on resale if you don't keep it for long).

your best bet IMO would be a used '02, from a private party. You can probably get a low mileage sub 30k, if you look hard, and are willing to wait and barter a bit.

Barring that, or if you want to make sure the car is babied during breakin, buy a '03 for msrp. The 2-3k difference will more than likely be the depreciation of the car as an '02 vs an '03.

If you can get a new one, that is the only way you'll know how it has been taken care of/driven for sure.

Noob here..

I just drove a 01 at Carmax, $27, 998 with 13K mileage. They had 7 to choose from and 12 total in the DC metro area. So seems like a good time to buy.

I asked if any of the TSB's were done, he said I could call a Honda dealer and check. Well if Carmax is so great and customer friendly he should have offered to do that for me.

I think I will have better piece of mind buying a new 03, I just wanted to drive one. I made the sales dude nervous by Vtecing in an on-ramp

I still want to drive a Z350 before I make a final decision, but I am a Honda person and after that drive I think the S will get my vote.

Buy a new one. I ordered a yellow '03 in Oct. for $32,000.
