CA legality question - 6 year old in passenger seat okay?
#11
I don't know of any 6 year old child that would be small enough to have to sit in a rear facing car seat.
This is off of the CA.gov web site.

If the child can sit in a forward facing car seat, they can sit in the S.

Glad OP is not a troll!
BTW, I trained my own daughter to drive a manual in my S. What a great rite of passage! She now prefers manual transmissions; she owns an Acura TL with the 6 speed MT.
rrounds, I found contradictory or at least some “gray” areas on “official” California websites on this. I agree with you on the 6 year old can be in a forward facing seat.

There's a sensor in the front seat that deactivates the air bag in certain conditions.
Rear facing car seat should never be used in front of an active airbag in any car. I'd not count on the seat sensor and would place any child seat facing forward and the seat as far to the rear as possible.
Since the seating is so low in our cars riding in one without the ability to see out makes little sense to me. Necessity may require this.

The passenger’s advanced airbag
system has weight sensors and unit
under the seat. If the sensors detect
an infant or small child may be in the
seat, the system will automatically
turn the passenger’s airbag off.

That is the reason for the disqualification of a rear facing child seat. However, if the kid meets the criteria of a forward facing seat, then he/she can be in the S’s front seat with or without airbag sensor deactivation.
A 6 year old should meet that.
