Close call today
Thanks for all the shared stories. I thought I might be alone with all these lunatics, although in this particular situation, he wasn't driving crazy, just unattentive.
VA S2K, Im glad too!

I have been in 3 of those in other cars.
1) 405 Northbound 8 AM. Traffic screechs to halt. I fully ABS my 96 Accord. 86 Crown Vic nails me hard and pushes me into POS Camry in Front of me. Another 96 accord hits Crown Vic and pushes him into me again. All cars wiped out except Camry I hit. She is fine and drives away. Sues me for "soft tissue damages." I give a deposition to a crowd of her lawyers and being the anal retentive engineer that I am I can quote times down to minutes, all license plates of cars involved, speeds, stopping distances, all off the top of my head. She has a previous lawsuit against a supermarket for a slip and fall and another car accident. Her lawyers know they are ****ed but my insurance decides it is cheaper to pay her off rather than fight it. My rates get jacked and she gets $$$. WTF?
Insurance 1, Me 0
2) POS Protege flys around corner and nails me as I wait at a light. Chick just bought car from her sister that morning. Luckily she has AAA and admits to everything. Also luckily I was in the wife's Explorer and it just bent the rear bumper a bit. I get a rental Expedition for a few days while they ordered parts and it is all good.
Insurance 1, Me 1
3) Southbound on I-5 on bridge between Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR on X-mas day. Traffic screeches to halt. Old coot in rental Hyundai rear ends my mother-in-law's 2000 Lincoln LS I am driving with 6 people in it. LS gets tiny scratch and we all are fine. Lincoln LS is a well built ride! Coots insurance is afraid of lawsit and gives us all $700 bucks each to buy us off. We weren't gonna sue anyways.
Insurance 1, Me 2
2nd day I have my Stook. I let my buddy drive it around the block. POS Subaru rustbucket has to swerve across 2 lanes to avoid rear-ending us at a light.
Just goes to prove the TrojanHorse theroem I developed back in College. 95% of people are f**king stupid.

Well I thought I had a unique experience, but I'm apparantly not alone.
Two weeks ago I was driving with the top down (it was only 3Celsius or 37F) and this
is a very busy highway with a lot of trafficjams. It's the kind of trafficjams
which makes you go 100kmh and suddenly stand still for a minute or so.
Well there's this old Opel Record behind me, with a complete family onboard. The kids in
the backseats are hanging over the frontseats to get a good look. The dad starts driving
very close behind me to get a good look. But suddenly the traffic comes to a halt.
I have to brake sharply (no ABS), but no problem. He hits the brakes and a lot of smoke
from the tyres (probably non-ABS car). Het makes it about 10 centimeters behind my car.
I watched this from my rearview mirror, it's a frightful event I can tell you.
But the braking was so violently that the kids were thrown onto the frontseats.
Well that's probably why you have to wear rear seatbelts nowadays in the Netherlands.

Well here's my story... I picked up my S2K about 2 weeks ago in the morning. Drove to work, no problem. Got to work, decided to take my friend out for a ride in the new car. Heading to lunch and pass by a Catholic church. Didn't hit me at the time, but it was Ash Wednesday and every Catholic in Richmond decides to go to this one church at lunch. Anyway, there's a giant Ford Bronco (the older "jumbo" size) in front of me slowing down near the entrance / exit to the church parking lot. I see that there's some "vehicle operator" (I refuse to call her a "driver") sticking the whole front end of her car across the right lane of traffic, just sitting there. I mean, it wasn't just a couple of inches of her car in the lane, she had the whole thing blocked. She couldn't see around the Bronco to the left lane of traffic so she's just sitting there. I come to a stop behing the Bronco and all the sudden hear this 5-second long screech of tires in full lock-up. There was a car behind me, rapidly declerating, but it was the Isuzu Trooper behing that car making the commotion. I'm thinking, "man, this is it, not even 2 hours in the S2K and it's a gonner". I see billowing smoke coming out of the poor bastard's (Isuzu) wheel wells then the sudden "pop" as he smacks into the car directly behind me. Luckily, that car did not get pushed into me, but I know it must have been close. All the while, this person pulling out hasn't moved an inch from blocking the traffic, seemingly oblivious (she had her window down the whole time) to the accident she just caused. I looked right at her and it didn't even register. I was so ticked off, I rolled my window down and yelled to her "you know you just caused an accident". Her reply was a half-hearted "sorry" as she finally made her left turn and drove off. Now, I know that the guy in the Isuzu should have not been following so closely and been paying attention, but you had to be there to see how stupid this woman was for just sitting in the lane of oncoming traffic.
Mindcore,
I'm no stranger to crinkling a car (so I sympathize), however the whole scenario played out in you post has me pissing myself. That is sitcom material. Life can be cruel (on so many levels)

It kind of reminds me of a similar story. I was on the highway heading home in the fast lane, 2 hot chicks come up beside me in a BMW conv. We exchanged winks and such and they were trying to get me to give them my cell number. As I was hand signleing the number traffic for them had stopped in the middle lane. When I was on the last digit the plowed into the car in front and I went flying past. By the time It registerd I was a fair ways ahead. So I kept going. I was glad I didn't finish the number. I would have hated to me on the end of that phone call.
Afterwards and to this day, I always felt kinda bad about the whole situation.
