Default Difference between CAI and Stock intake..

I am running a stock intake without the cover right now just to see how it feels and sounds. I do notice the loss of HP like people have stated. It sounds great though. So when you swith to a CAI which has a filter that is not covered why is there an increase of power rather than a decrease of power. Is it the quality of the intake tube? Are they better insulated? Just wondering. Thanks.

the CAI doesnt get its air from the engine bay. colder air = denser air. someone will chime in with more info. =D. its best to put your intake cover back on tho.

definition from google search:
A cold air intake is a system to bring down the temperature of the air going into a car for the purpose of increasing the power of the internal-combustion engine. A secondary goal is to increase the appeal of a car by changing the apperarance of a car's engine bay and creating an attractive intake noise. These aftermarket parts come in many different colors and many different sizes, and are an inexpensive way to increase performance.

Take a look at where the air comes from. Is it drawing air from within the engine bay or from someplace that doesn't get heated up by engine bay heat first? That's the key.

The colder air is denser, so you're getting more air into the engine, and more oxygen for combustion. The stock intake (with the cover on) is a type of CAI, since it collects air at the front of the hood, as opposed to under the hood. There is a little home made mod that redirects more air from the lower grille to the mouth of the stock intake.

I've been told that the AEM CAI on the S2000 is very loud. I don't know about other CAI like Injen, on the S. I only have experience with the AEM V1 on a GSR, and it's tolerable with a quieter exhaust. I think the K&N Intake is a little louder than stock but not by much. Gives you a few extra horses too.
