Don't feel the S2000 is that fast
The evo and the sti are in a different class then the s2000. Just match up the s2000 with other cars within it's class such as the 350z, porsche boxster, and audi tt?? hummm.. lets see
350z 5.5/14.3
boxster 6.0/14.6
tt 6.9/15.2
s2000 5.4/14.1
hummm... looks like the s2000 is faster...
and just to throw out there the m3 4.8/13.6 thats not to much faster for a $50k car as to our $35k max.....

Fast is relative. When I look at the numbers quoted by magazines the S2000 is faster than everything I've driven minus the '95 Supra Turbo. I still haven't gotten an S2000, but as mentioned throughout this thread, the car is more of a renaissance vehicle...handles superbly, drop dead gorgeous, somewhat uncommon, and pretty good performance. I'll be coming from an '98 Civic and an '84 Corvette. The Corvette in its time was one of the fastest cars on the street, not to mention the best handling. When I began looking for a new sports car I wanted something not everyone had, race car handling, roadster, reliable, and a 0-60 below 6 secs. The S2000 is the answer...appreciate it for what it is...a well thought out sports car.
Get you one of those fancy new turbo'd Neons, yeah that'll do the trick, or a Mustang.
You really are in the wrong place and the wrong car if your purpose for it revolves around street racing and straight line speed. This car is NOT about 0-60 times, it's about the visceral feel of the car itself, it's about a perfectly executed turn with the tail hanging out just a little. It's especially about that screaming engine note.
And yes, compared to my (previous) modified, nitrous sucking Civic, this IS a Rocket Ship

Compared to my daily beater, a 75hp Nissan Sunny, the S is a rocket ship!
My previous performance car was an E36 M3 and the S2000 simply feels faster on acceleration even with lower torque. It's the combination of the seat position, the suspension tuning and engine noise that gives much more of a thrill when driving it.

Yes, there are lots of cars out there that are faster, but the S is no slouch. I just did an autox on a kart track last weekend, my essentially stock S2000 on track tires was only 0.916 a second slower than a Porsche GT3 that was there. The GT3 was admittedly on those amazing Porsche street tires, but a professional road racer drove it.
I also believe the S some how seems to mask how fast it actually is. I know when I drive some other cars I get the sensation I am going faster than I am, and yet in the S it is the other way, I look down at the speedo and then stand on the brakes because I'm surprised I'm actually going that fast.
Good luck with your ownership, I hope in the end you are happy with your S.
