Exactly

No, pressure is higher when cold, although flow may be inhibited.

IMO VTEC operation is limited:
1) By the ECU that turns the function on when the water temperature comes up to normal.
2) By oil pressure needed to overcome the spring in the VTEC solenoid.

I still do not see any way that low oil LEVEL with interfere with VTEC operation unless it is so low that it impacts pressure and in that case the check engine light would be on.

I have just put 3 yes THREE litres of oil into my s2k and she is still not reading as full on the dipstick. i reckon that i was running on about 30% oil after 5000 miles.

and honda told me that "they never burn oil"

i advise you all to go and check your engine now and regularly.

The owners manual specifies to check your oil AT EACH FILL UP. Hey...Honda built it they must know something. As for the MAP sensor issue....there is NO oil showing on the dipstick cold. Starting it will only lower it more. I'd start with oiling the Stook and see what happens. As for V-Tec vs VTEC that was my mistake not the engineer at Honda :-).

The S2000 cylinder composition is very similar to that currently being used in Honda's highest performance motorcycle engines (929, RC-51/SP-1, F4i). This construction architecture has many advantages (including overbore capability), however (and this is a big however) oil consumption does occur during break-in. Honda's traditional reliability makes many seem to overlook the meticulous maintenance needed for any high performance engine, particularly high RPM/high compression combinations. Severely damaged/destroyed motorcycles with nearly empty crankcases are not uncommon. Simple rule of thumb; the higher the performance an engine gives you, the more care and feeding it deserves from you!

While the chemical composition of the 929, RC51, and F4 are the same it appears they have largely varying heat treat processes and final temper (i.e. rockwell numbers). Where do the cylinder hardness of the S2K lie? Any data?

i never unscrewed anything, i just unplugged the MAP and plugged it back in with the car off and after restarting everything worked fine.

Well the problem is cured. - It was low oil pressure due to very low oil level.

The low oil light had not come on cos it was just above the level where it would come on but it was sufficiently low to affect performance.

It now drives like a dream again.

Thankyou everyone for your help.
