This idiot light came on as I drove home today: emission control problem, says the owners manual. 8000 miles. Have checked for loose/missing gas cap- not the source. Has anyone else had this happen- and what was the problem? Sure would love to avoid a trip to the dealer.

If it comes back after you turn off the car then you gotta take it to the dealer to have them reset it.

To reset the check engine light, with the ignition off, remove the back up light fuse under the dash for ten seconds, then replace.

I caused my light to come on when I left a VTEC electrical plug loose, which I had removed to avoid hitting it while changing oil filter. Even when I replaced the plug, the light stayed on. Apparently system spots electrical problems, and once tripped, stays tripped. Since I found the problem, I reset the light rather than take to dealer.

Auto Zone pulled the code at no charge and confirmed I'd not tightened
the gas cap. I successfully turned off the malfunction
light by disconnecting the battery cable from the negative post.
I thought I'd have to reset the radio code but, did not have to.
Thanks for Greg for his post of so many years ago. I would not
have known Auto Zone would pull codes for no charge. My local
Honda dealer wanted $100.00

While I would not buy anything but car care items from this place, they will give you tool's (you have to stay in the lot though) to do all checks for free (battery, starter, alternator, timing,CEL's etc...) or they can do it for you if you like
