Default final drive question

Hi thinking about installing 4.55 on a complete stock drive train.

Are there any downside?

Do I need to change flywheel/clutch first?

thanks.

It's 4.57
Final drive gears are in the diff.
At the rear, between the rear wheels.
Not where the clutch / flywheel is / are.

Downside could be gear noise.
Higher fuel consumption (highway).
Costs.

Upsides are to many to list

thanks... for some reason my garage guy (who moded a DC5 type 5 to like 350 bhp) said that he can get me j's 4.4 (right)... but it involves a "full striping" of my gear-box?

make any sense?

oh sorry the question on clutch/flywheel was if the stock clutch/flywheel can handle the new ratio or will it wear out any faster? could be the dumb question.

No, that doesn't make any sense.

I have the 4.44s in my car. Here is the write-up I did on that swap:

You decide if it's "full stripping".

Since "gears" are in the back end of the drivetrain and power delivery, everything "upstream" of them actually work with more ease. Just think what it's like to crank on the hand of a winch. If the gearing allows you to crank it faster, it's going to feel easier.
