yes their lidar will stand alone, although having the 8500 hooked in also gives me one more sensor facing forward instead of just the two in the forward lidar. With the sensitivity of the 8500 I haven't found the need to top mount it for radar, It has never had a problem picking up ka etc at distance. Because lasers are so exact, (I've watched them shoot me then the car next to me, when they move it just that far you don't register the laser. Usually they aim for the plate, my front lidar diffusers are on either side of where the plate would be, the lower center position puts my 8500 radar eye closer to their aiming point.

anyway it works well, you don't have to remove trim to put the detector there or run cabling, and it's easy to remove. It also looks better there I think.

NP. I mounted my detector right below the rearview mirror.

That's the only way I could get it to have a proper view out the front and rear glass.

Even so, it detects laser easily from cops and falses from the Infiniti FX and EX35's adaptive cruise control.

Regarding where my radar is mounted on the dash. It has a clear shot front and rear thru the wind deflector. I have the exact same detector in my conversion van. It is mounted high. The van presents a very large flat face to radar so there's lots of return. I haven't seen any degredation of distance in the S when passing thru the local motorcycle cops favorite place. Most of our local cops now have that little telescope looking laser gun with a sight in it.

I won't argue that higher isn't better for radar, It is a line of sight issue. Higher is better. I used to work in radio gear for motorola. what I was trying to say is that on my S the lower mount works well for radar and better for laser mounted lower and closer to their aiming point. I get enough early radar warning it's the laser I wish to confound. There is no warning with that.

similar to Corvette mount.

I also use the remote display to the upper left of the steering wheel coming out of the A-pillar. With the remote no one sees the lights on the back of the V1, but it has the most unobscured view being in the center.
