Why is this ridiculous? If this thread was 5 pages of CR "love" you'd be beside yourself.

S2ki is made for discussions like this, and the reason I'm a member. I learn a lot of stuff, and enjoy talking about things here with fellow S2000 owners - Thats what makes it fun and why I pay my 50/year to be here.

Not everyone digs my car or my tuning style. Whatever.

Don't get butthurt because not everyone loves your car either. You bought it, you like it, be content.
I couldn't have said it better, well put.

Sifting through this thread, there are valuable pieces of info which validates the discussion, despite some emotional and irrational viewpoints.

What is touching a nerve with some enthusiasts has it's origin in a marketing failure IMO. No one can deny the importance horsepower plays in performance, both real and imagined, and no matter how small an improvement. Look at all the $ spent on exhausts. Their marketing people should have gone to engineering and asked for something, 4, 5, 6, HP, something to boost the perceived value.

My $.02, now back to the fray.

[QUOTE=Saki GT,Mar 18 2008, 01:47 PM] I think most people are more disappointed in what Honda is offering than in the CR itself.

I can't take it any more.

I think I will go and beat my head on the garage wall some more.

I know why they did it...chasing the dollars. But I never 'felt' the S was about chasing the dollars with Honda until this model.
Not quite, actually. The original designer of the S2000 was retiring from Honda, and wanted to give the S2000 enthusiasts a parting gift. I can only guess that economics constrained the limits of modifications, but he did give us an S2000 that expresses what the S2000 is all about to an even higher degree.

"It was very rewarding to see so many fans of the S2000 gathered together for this event," said Shigeru Uehara, chief engineer of the Honda S2000. "I was very happy to present the S2000 CR as my gift to enthusiasts in the United States."
The S2000 CR (CR for "Club Racer") introduces more track-oriented suspension settings, aerodynamic-enhancing bodywork, a removable hardtop, higher rigidity and reduced weight to the S2000 formula. The added features are designed to appeal to enthusiasts who enjoy open track-day events and also provide a more ideal starting point for racers who modify the S2000 for competition in club racing events.

I am familiar with the background story on the CR.

While interesting, the "how the CR came to be story" amounts to marketing.

Sell a pimped out Explorer for profit? Yes.

Sell a pimped out Explorer with Eddie Bauer's moniker on it? Yes, Yes, and Ford can tack another $2500 on the price for the same vehicle. (at least back in the day)

I am sure the the designer is a great guy, but I'd rather have some HP and less sacrifice/more improvement, rather than a touching backstory.

But, that's me, and I'm an oddball.
But here's the thing.. Lets give Honda the benefit of the doubt and assume that they truly wanted to turn out a track-optimized S2000. And let's say they wanted to keep the price within 3-5 K of the current price. They did *the exact right thing.* Functional aero at speed, included hardtop, better springs/shocks and (and everyone is overlooking this), stickier tires are going to do more for laptimes than an incremental power increase, or even a significant one. Throw in better track seats and the quicker steering ratio, plus additional body bracing and you have a better track car than a stock s2k with a supercharger for less money.

Power might be what sells cars, but handling is a quicker way to faster laptimes.

So a 2008 S2000 CR would be faster on the track than a supercharged 2008 S2000? What kind of track are we talking about - some tight autocross track or some huge sweeping track where a 2 second difference is realized from minor tweaks and no power gains (CR vs standard)?

Not buying it..
