Help: Can't get rid of CEL P0420 on '08 S2K
00-05 models often do not require any CEL fix for a HFC.
But that seems to be dependent on each individual car OR HFC itself.
06+ cars often throw a CEL with anything except the factory catalyst.
Ironically, the HFC modification seems to only be worthwhile on 06+ cars because it reportedly allows one to lower the VTEC actuation and tune for more low end/midrange power.
For 00-05 cars, the only rational benefit I can see from a HFC is that its a cheap fix if your OEM cat fails.

Mine is a '06. Never threw a CEL when I drove around on the stock tune for a few months before I got a dynotune (disabling the secondary o2) and don't have an angled adapter, just plugged the o2 sensor directly into the HFC. Mine is a 63mm inlet and 70mm outlet that I had Berk fabricate for me though. And yes, my VTEC engages verrrrry low. One of the reasons the HFC was one of my first mods.
Again, the issue seems to be dependent on individual catalysts. Yours might have been on the cusp of being clean enough just with the straight defouler.
But I'd bet that after some use, that cat would throw a CEL (if the 2O2S wasn't disabled).
My MY07 had a couple year old Berk when I got it. CEL like a mf. ECU almost called the cops on me.
On my MY00 car? No CEL.
Definitely. I had the code showing as pending before my last smog, so I'd bet so too. The angled defouler should fix OP's issue, just make sure to enable the secondary O2 or your readiness monitors will never set.
