Help Please! Need to convince parents....

Did you read the guy's post??? No where did he say that his parents were "rich". From what he wrote we may as well assume that his family is on welfare as assume that his dad is Donald Trump.
He is getting flamed primarily for this comment:
Honestly I don't give a crap how much money a person has when it comes time to buy their son/daughter a car. If I was Bill Gates and my 16 year old son asked me to buy him an S2000 for his first car I would laugh at him and then hand him the keys to his brand spankin new Civic. If I felt like splurging on him because I was embarrassed to have my son driving a Honda then I would buy him a 3 series sedan with an automatic. [/billgatesscenario]
The point here is that I am not jealous of a 16 year old driving a brand new Range Rover or Benz sedan (AMG excluded
). I am DEATHLY AFRAID of a 16 year old driving a sports car that he doesn't know how to handle and trying to show his ass to his girlfriend so he can get "stinky fingers" for the first time and killing me or a loved one in the process.
I think the majority of folks who you are referring to as "jealous" are more scared than envious.

haters...
some of the things you say are true. (ie. young kids driving recklessly)
I agree with that.
HOWEVER, most of you are quick to pass JUDGEMENT on every 17/18 year old kid who wants to drive an s2k BEFORE you even know what that person is LIKE. In ADDITION, most of you are quick to pass judgement on the parental DECISION (ie. "spoiling their kid", putting society at risk, etc).
What i'm saying is, SURE, as a group, young kids that get candy cars for free ARE spoiled and probably DO drive recklessly. HOWEVER don't be so quick to pass judgement on EVERYONE specifically as each "kid" is his own person and MAY BE A MORE CAREFUL driver than you are and may be FORTUNATE, but not spoiled.
I believe in stereotypes and generalities, however, they are to be applied to GROUPS, not specific individuals. When it comes to individuals, you must not be so judgmental.
end of story.

Probably not the end of story...
Thinking about this - when did it become a duty for the parents to buy cars and college? I went into the AF and was 21 when a bought a brand new '72 240Z (with the help of the local credit union). Somewhere between here and there parents now "owe" the kids school and cars and maybe even a house - because we caused them to be born????

This thread is making me sick.
Somebody in this thread said, just because your parents CAN buy you a car, doesn't mean they should. This is correct.
Somebody also said that if your parents offer you a car, you'd be inhuman to say "nah, that's alright, i'd rather work for it". While very noble, that just ain't gonna happen.
I can apply a personal experience to this. I am from a lower middle income household. My dad "gave" me (still his, but I drove it) a 87 Ford Escort wagon when I was 16. It was awesome; I don't care what you say. But I wrecked it in 3 months. That was the last car he ever bought me (duh). On the other hand, my fiance's family is very well off--they bought her the first BMW Z3 in New Mexico in her senior year of high school, and then a new M3 a year after that. She's had one speeding ticket her whole life, never got in trouble, attended college on a full scholarship, and appreciates the car very much.
I understand why people urge you to buy the car yourself (I did) but I also understand the other lifestyle; having cars given to you by doting parents. From what you've written so far, regarding your driving history, attitude towards college expenses, etc., you need to buy your own. Period. But again, if your parents want to give you the car, you're not going to say No. Unfortunately.

i don't know you, i've never seen you drive, and i have nothing against your parents buying you a car, but as a 21 (22 later this month) year old college student, living on campus/away from home, i am going to agree that driving an s2000 (as your only car) is not a smart thing to do. I have my s2000, and an old 87 toyota van as a beater. I lived with the van as my only car for quite some time, but i don't think i can honestly do the same with the s2000. The car, while great, is horribly inconvenient, lacks storage, and the ability to carry people around. That said, you'd probably enjoy it more in different circumstances. If you're going to be living at home, it shouldn't be an issue, but otherwise i'd recommend getting another car. If you're looking for aonther fast car, maybe the rx8?
anyway, now that that's out of the way, there are quite a few things that you can use to help convince your parents. For one, the s2000, while it's a convertible, is actually extremely safe, and scored highest ratings in all crash tests. The other thing is, you're only young once. While driving a 2 seater convertible is easily doable once you're married with a family (as i'm sure many members here can attest to), you can still argue that now is the best time to buy a car like this (NOTE: this will probably only work if they know you to be a rational person who'd probably end up with a sedan once you get a family). Other than that, you can argue (this would probably be a lie), that while it's a sports car, it's still a honda, so you get the best of both worlds - you'd have reliability and wouldn't have the urge to drop a boatload of money into the car.
again, i'd recommend agaisnt the s2000 for practicality purposes, but good luck with whatever you decide.

Wow. Well at the very least, this is definitely more replies than I expected in such a short period of time. I truly do appreciate everyone's input though. Only after re-reading the original post did I realize how bad it sounded. In my attempts to keep it short, I obviously omitted some very important details, and worded certain statements very badly. Although I would love to correct it, I don't see a need since, as it appears, everyone at least by know already has their bias, and any corrections or changes will only cause more chastisement on the point that I am only changing it because those topics were brought up. I do want to thank Harpoon, C U AT 9K, jyeung528, and hoomza444 for their helpful input. And to everyone else, it was interesting to see so many similar opinions, and assumptions from so many different people. And to those who questioned the genuinity of the post, I don't understand why, they know nothing of me, and cannot question my honesty on the first post I have ever made. In any case I have definitely learned a lot, and will try to make sense of all the differing opinions, again thank you to everybody.
And to the gentleman who wanted to know, including all expenses, Miami is just shy of 40k per year.
