Actually, its not the fact that HS kids get an S that bothers me. Its when kids in high school are consistantly given all sorts of things and they have no appreciation for their hard working parents. I used to have a friend that did not have to pay a dime during high school. Half way through college, her mother had cancer and could not work any longer. She suddenly had to cut off her daughter with tuition, to save more money in the long run. Instead of supporting her mom through rough times all she could do was hate her mom for not giving her money. People like this make me sick.....

I just got mine a few weeks ago. after 1 year in college (freshman year i guess). In high school i rode the bus.. no cars. T_T. 1 year w/ my sister's 02 rav 4, now i got the S.

My parents payed for it, but.... i have to do monthly payment to them and pay it off .. so its like getting a 30k loan from my parents w/ no interest =)!!
in the exact same situation as you are. no interest is good.

Nope, you are not the only one...

For a short period of time in high school I had a '73 Mercury Capri, 2.6 V6 (for the kids in this thread let me just say, that German built Ford was one fast car in its day). After I crashed it and repaired it twice, I decided to sell it and get something a little slower and less sporting so I could live long enough to get to college.

And I have to say, it still looks good to me today, what a fantastic car, but it was just too much for me at the time.

nice car!

i had a 91 mazda 929 S with the DOHC engine. that thing was a beast, with 190 crank horsepower and RWD, i could do one wheel burnouts all day. I nearly killed myself in that car multiple times, i couldnt imagine having a car that was as fast as the S2K back then... I would probably be dead, that and my parents wouldnt give me money to buy a nice car

Damn, I'm an old fart around here. What the hell do all you little rich kids' parents pay a month for insurance? Jeez!
no need to hate on the kids, if your parents offered to get the car you certainly wouldn't turn them down

If a high school kid has to work for it all the time for what they want, then they will end up having no time to study-->worse college-->most likely not the best job.
Different times, different values, different culture.

When I was a kid, think 1960's, we had to work to make money for anything we wanted because the parents were working just to keep the mortgage paid and food on the table. I had a car before I was 16 because once I turned 16 I needed it to drive to work because I grew up in the country.

For me, working during high school taught me how to manage my time because I had to do good in school, and then in college this time management skill was critical so I could be on dean's list and work 20 to 30 hours per week. And that motivation is what eventually paid off and put me in a good job.

I hold nothing against kids who get handouts from parents, I just wonder if in reality the parent is not doing a disservice, because eventually all kids will come to learn, if you want something out of life, you got to work at it, and chances are good, you are going to have to work damn hard at it...

I would say this is a matter of difference in culture.
I'm an Asian and I know exactly what Asian parents want from their kids - Good education. I think there is NO way a kid's gonna be able to pay everything for their S + food + housing etc. My parents bought me the S, and I've mentioned that I'm paying them back but with no interest. They were very worried about safety. My mom repeated like countless times "don't drive fast when you get this car". I guess the point is Asian parents would rather buy the car for their kids and let them concentrate on their study.

My parents bought me this when I started my internship working full-time. I need a car to go to work (well not that I need an S2000), but yea I told my parents I really wish to drive a vert when I'm still young and had hard time convincing them that I'd drive safely.

I had a choice between 2001 spa yellow ap1 and 2004 nfr ap2 when I was buying the s2k. 01 was for 20k and 04 was for 28k. I was like, "so can I get 01 and use the 8k left to mod my car?", but my parents were completely against me modding the car (they just simply think it's waste of money and it'll increase the chance of me driving dangerously and waste time on my car instead of working hard). So I was like "oh ok then I'll take the 28k one."

Well, I had a fairly high paying job in high school, so after driving my parents beater Camry for a year, I was able to pay cash for my certified used MY04 without help from my parents. I don't know what twisted logic cannot appreciate the fact that someone can work their ass to buy something that they have wanted for years. Consequently, I have a lot respect for my car, I don't street race, do burnouts, or partake in any other adolescent behavior, and I am VERY protective of it (my parents haven't even driven it). However, the older members of this board have a valid point in regards the flood of immature s2ki members lately, to which i agree with them completely. You must not generalize though, just because I got my s2000 in high school, doesn't make me an immature spam spewing fan boy.

Thanks, and your 929S sounds like it too was fun

The Capri was amazing, it was a big time winner in its day.
