Thanks Barry, now at least someone is posting more detailed information for the more detailed scope on this issue. Obviously it is of no great concern since it's not the main focus of the issue here. Oh well, I've said enough on this topic anyhow. It's time to shut myself up on this. Damn, I talked too much again. But close to 50% of a new car, I think I'm still quite right. I believe a new car is sold for around $30K or so in the States?

I think you would be $8,200 richer if the rev limiter could really prevent over-revving with a missed down shift. Unfortunately, the rev limiter only limits you from adding gasoline and air after you cross 9,300 rpm. It cuts off the fuel. If you choose to over-rev by adding energy from momentum by an inappropriate downshift, only a lightening quick clutch push can limit the damage. Obviously your friend's clutch foot failed to limit his over-revving your F20C.

Honda might cover the cost as a good will measure, but there is no way they can warrant the engine against your destroying it by over-revving. Similarly, they cannot warrant the car against damage from your driving it straight into a brick wall.

I know you feel bad about this and I do too. Many of us S2000 owners, myself certainly included, have never had such a great performance vehicle to drive before. Thus our inexperience leads us to some trouble. Perhaps this isn't true for you, but it is true for me, and for your friend who was driving and missed the shift.

I would expect close to 40 hours of labor. Lets see 40 hours at $50 per hour, $2000 in labor
WOW Barry, where do you live? Labor in California is $80/hr.!

Labor in Texas is $67 per hour, and it takes 17.9 hours to install a new lower block assembly and head.
With parts, tax, and labor, my insurance is paying $7335.18 for engine work on my car.
That 17.9 hours includes taking the old intake manifold and several other 're-usable' items off my old engine, and installing them on the new engine. Still a very costly figure if you had to pay for it out of pocket.
I guess I should have included the labor figure in my first post.

Good luck on your fix... and just because I am throwing this nasty number out there doesn't mean that it will take that much to fix your car. Your head is probably all that needs to be replaced. My entire engine is being replaced as a result of water getting in the engine. I cracked a cylinder wall. Others that have over revved there engine just needed head work.

I think the problem most people have with it is that he let his friend drive the car 100+mph (and shift at high rpm) which seems kind of odd when he's feeling so bad that he cannot drive.

Don worked on mine all of Thursday, all of Friday, half of Saturday, all of Monday and all of Tuesday. "Touch-up" after that included getting the air out of the cooling system (when I took the over-heated car back) and retorquing the steering column bolts to eliminate the play. That is how I "guestimated" 40 hours.

I think $50 is about right for Sheridan, Wyoming shop work. I piad $150 for my 3 hour hardtop install.

Ressurecting this thread from the dead for a few reasons....

Although this happened over 16 months ago, I'd like to bump for a few reasons

1) To let people know that this was NEVER covered under warantee, and that when the rep from NAH came down to look at the car, he printed out my thread from S2ki to use as evidence to NOT cover the car under warantee and show it was driver error. Honda monitors ALL threads on S2ki

2) To offer as a warning to other people, and to remind young people to treasure there things. Sure, its easy to say in hindsite, but I should have never let him drive, even though the real reason was I had 2-3 drinks, and even though I was sober, I felt it was not worth the risk to drive. I now treat my cars like children, its just not worth it

3) Clarification. It was an 01 with about 10,000 miles. I had another 01 motor brought in, Staten Island Honda put the a new shortblock and longblock back together, and the new motor was as strong as the old one. I had the 2nd gear grind, and some minor damage to the trunk (from another accident) and sold it for an 02, which I have now 23,000 miles with no damage.

PS - It was top of 3rd and instead of going into 4th he went back into 2nd....

I just want people to learn from my mistakes

Happily Driving My 02, Going to School, but not posting alot,
Ray

Thanks for the update. What color '02 did you buy? How do you like the glass rear window and the better stereo?
