Default New soundproofing topic

I've read all of the soundproofing messages in this forum and couldn't wait to try it out myself. I have an 2005 S2000 and just applied several coats of Quietcoat in the trunk area alone. I applied some to the bottom side of the plastic convertible top tray also, but overall I can't really notice much of a difference in noise. I can still hear the muffler sound from behind me. I was hoping to at least cut the noise in half.

I'd like to hear more up to date experiences and comments from other owners. It's not possible to coat 100% of the trunk area since there are so many holes/vents especially when you get closer to the the rear of the seats. The noise must be coming from elsewhere.

For those owners that are getting results must be finding the key area where the noise is coming from. The trunk is obviously not the key area.

From my experience, the trunk was the LAST place you wanted to soundproof as far as drone was concerned. I listed up what I found in this thread...

Thanks, this is the kind of feedback that is useful to other owners as well. There are so many experiences to sift through, but after actually trying it myself and reading yours again, you're link appears to be the one to follow.

I am surprised that soundproofing under the passenger floor made such a difference since it seems like most of the noise I hear appears to come from behind me. I didn't want to remove all of the seats and carpet, but if this is the most effective, then it will be worth it.

From the noise behind me, what would you say would most solve that?

I found the sparetire, fuel tank, wheelwell area is a high sound transmitting area. The exhaust split and diff are both directly below this zone. You will find that pretty much the whole car lacks any sound absorbing material.

I'm finding that a good way to really see if an area needs soundproofing is to do like you did with the trunk. That is, covering up an area such as the convertible top tray with thick pillows/dynamat or covering the floor with several sheets of dynamat before I actually stick it to the car.

So far, I've found an easy way to reduce the noise that seems to come from the rear. Most of the noise in the rear seems to be coming from the drainage holes on the convertible top tray. I put a small pillow in each of the two corners and that that really reduced the noise back there. There is still plenty of noise elsewhere but I've yet to find that source. Have any others identified any other key areas?

I followed Thetz's instructions when I did my sound deadening.

I like the knuckle-tap test. Over the passenger foot well, thick coat over the gas tank under the spare tire. Underneath the car above the cat and above the diff shield.

Then again, I did all that and more so I don't know what was the most important. But I do know it made a big difference with the hard top on.

I'm having firewall Dynamat installed currently, will let you know if that makes a lick of difference.

Ckit, keep me posted how the firewall Dynamat worked out. I'm noticing that alot of the noise IS coming from the front.

Thetz, when you say to cover the holes in the framebeams in step 3.5, do you happen to have a picture of underneath your car showing it. I've noticed you've taken a lot of nice under the car photos.

thanks
