Fair enough, plus you dodged owning a black car...lol. There will be others. Best of luck.

what exactly should I look for? Check the build date via the VIN?

I'm persnickety and mid model '02 engines had the 4 hole oil squirter bolts. 4 is better than 2 if you're doing any FI or serious track work. If you're just driving around and its just a drivin' around car, not likely a big issue. but like I said, i'm persnickety. There is a thread somewhere around here which talks about the engine number limits which had and did not have this upgrade. It happened in mid '02 sometime.

Was this a model year or calendar year change? Easy enough to look at the build date on the drivers door jam and compare the model year in the VIN. There were about 10,000 MY 2002 cars build. Model year changes about September.

It's a shame the build date doesn't show in the Registry (here). Mine was July 2006 making it an "almost-2007" car. 200 built after mine. Looks like it was built 2 weeks before model year change, certainly in the last month.

Calendar year revision. It happened sometime in mid 02.

The Craigslist post has been deleted so maybe you've gotten it already, but my favorite year is 03'. Granted, I've never driven an AP1, but an 03' is guaranteed to have the better banjo bolts, has the higher rev limit, and has the quicker steering ratio that they went back to with the CR.
