Since the Garmins will not extend below the roof rail line of sight, it will only be a problem if the stock roof rail blocks your line of sight -- I suppose that may be the case for very tall people, but they probably can't fit into the car anyway.
Hi Rick,
looks like the garmin 2730 has finally been released. i'll be ordering one tonight.
i looked at most posts in this thread, and didn't see anything abuot wiring. with your visor mount, i assume there will be room to feed the both the 3.5mm headphone jack (to the head unit, for XM radio) and power cable (to somewhere?) where it can be hardwired, correct?
thanks for any info

I can't wait to see how this progresses. I currently have the backing portion of the nuvi mount zip-tied to the vent on the right-hand side of the steering wheel. I put a small piece of grippy foam behind it and it's actually worked out quite well as a temporary fix. I'd much rather have a cleaner more integrated installation like Rick's project though.
For those that haven't tried the nuvi yet, give it a shot. It's very well implemented. Love the find-by-name feature and improved voice prompting most of all - 10x better than the GPS in my M3 (cept for the huge screen - I miss that!).

is there a delay in the 3d mapping?
The 3d mode is not "smooth" if that's what you mean. It's still reasonably fast to draw, resize, etc though. I usually use the 2d north-always-up view though.
Here are pics of my temporary solution. Its great to have it so close and easy to reach, but glare is an issue in this location, and my fancy zip-tie solution does not allow for tilting and adjustment

Like I said - it works pretty well to hold me over for something more integrated, like the project in this thread!
