s2000 or miata
the miata is probably more fun at the posted speed limits than the s2000. feel, handling, everything is set up very well for a fun car. if you track, there is a huge community for them, and they are very inexpensive to run regularly.
the s2000 is faster and more upscale, and to me, it's a lot more fun because of the greater limits. it just has a lot more performance potential. also, if you are interested in aesthetic appeal, IMO it wins that category hands down. corky romano ruined the miata to me
tracking the s will get better times and will make you love the car more, but it will cost more than tracking the miata, so if you're on a budget, weigh that one out.
older miatas are not fast by current standards. you could get a newer one, but a used 04+ S2000 price is similar to a 170hp-ish miata (still not fast), so i'd look at either a cheap miata or bite the bullet on a more expensive s2000.
a cheap miata to gets you the fun factor and leaves money left over, but getting a newer s2000 gets you a higher performance car. both are reliable. and if you get an old miata, you could keep the si for lousy weather.
I just got the s2000, as it's more what i wanted. I love the car!

I had driven a reglular miata and own my S2000 and there is no comparason. My S2000 feels way more sportier and has a much firmer suspension. Perhaps you should check out the mazda speed MX5. It may be pretty impressive but I haven't driven that yet.

I just drove the new Miata two days ago at a dealership. I really wanted to see what the fuss was about. The thing that surprised me the most is the sticker said 30k for the hardtop version. I would NEEEVER pay that much for it.
Don't get me wrong though, I was pretty impressed by the car. The gas pedal is really responsive and the steering as well. I think this is what stood out to me the most and made it feel like a "go-kart". It has a nice little surge of power but it seemed to be more low-end and when you revved it, it didn't go anywhere. It feels like you're going faster than you are.
Styling, the S2000 definitely wins. I looked at the Miata for a long time and felt it was much bubblier and the lights are more round. The S2000 on the other hand has sharper headlights/taillights and a more mature body. A lot of people say how they look similar and I can see where they're coming from but once you look closely, there are several differences.
Oh and the interior was a lot cheaper than the S2000 and it seemed like they actually copied the Honda. They coulda had this in previous models though, I'm not sure. The little door in the middle of the center console was on the new Miata but it was so cheap.
The tranny was pretty smooth but not as much as the S2000. Overall I was pretty impressed with the drive but felt it could use more power. The price is too steep but the hardtop is nice. If I needed a car while I was at the Mazda dealership, I woulda much rather taken the RX-8. I drove that awhile back and that was a great car. Too bad on the gas mileage though.

If you have to ask us which car you would like better, you should stick with a Yugo....
The Miata is a great sports car, period. Of course it not for everybody.
The engine does not compare to the S2000's, and the cornering limits are lower. But how it drives once those limits are exceeded is where the magic is. And it is a lot of fun to drive at any speed. It is a lighter car than the S, and there is simply no substitute for lightness in a sports car when it comes to feel.
