Also, as a site note, what restrictions does Hagerty apply to insuring S2000's? I assume there are year/mileage restrictions, etc. as with most collector cars.

Have you dealt with any claims? I got a quote from them just now. What I liked was the fact that they aren't going to try and give me nada pricing in the event of a total loss.
I'm not sure where most of you guys are looking, but there are plenty of 'clean' S2000s on the market. All you have to do is look for the later models(ie. 08+). Now if you want a 'clean' AP1, that's a different story as most are probably in a ditch or vandalized with 'racing mods'.
I think that if you still look you can find a clean car at a good price - maybe you should try looking outside of CA. I don't think that S2000's will ever be hyper valuable cars that experience the kind of value growth that air cooled 911's have lately or that muscle cars did 10 years ago. I think they'll be enthusiast classics and value may rise modestly.

If not a collectors car now, I believe it will follow in the NSX's footsteps. (my old blue 03 nsx is in the cars for sale now)
But, if you want one to "collect"... Here it is:
800 mile AP1

J-rod, you mad?
I have owned three S2000's in the past, one high mileage AP1, and two low mileage AP1 (sub 30k miles). I sold the most recent one back in 2011.
I have been looking at purchasing another recently, as a fun weekend car for the wife and I here in Southern Cali. I have noticed, however, that almost without exception, everyone is asking $3-4k over KBB, and almost without exception, they're all convinced their car is worth it, and that anyone who wants to offer them less simply doesn't know what they're talking about. Oh, they're never in a hurry to sell either. I would say that 9/10 fit this description. I'm not sure if this is a southern California characteristic of the market (as I used to live on the east coast), or just of the S2000 market in general now. I'm not concerned with what I spend, so long as I don't overspend when I do it.
So, let me be the first to inform all of you, at least in my opinion, THE HONDA S2000 IS NOT A COLLECTOR CAR . . . YET! The S2000 has certainly bottomed out in value, and has increased slightly within the last 2-3 years, but the value of the average car has not gone up over $3k. As an example, when between cars.com/autotrader/craigslist/s2ki I can find as many as 20+ S2000's for sale at any given time within 40 miles of downtown San Diego, it's not a collector car.
Anyways, what's the deal with this? Is it all S2000 sellers now? Is it just more pronounced in Southern California? Curious as to what people's thoughts on the topic are.

Nope. For an S2000 with 800 miles on it, that's a very fair price. That car is L.O.W. mileage. I believe there are certain low mileage S2000's that are worth the mark-up, but someone's 100k mile S that's on cheap springs, and ap2 wheels instead of ap1 doesn't justify such a mark-up in price.
You are looking in a different market that is new to you. Its a whole different would of cars out there, and so far you are only becoming aquainted with how the S fits into that new world. I bet you will encounter more noteworthy car culture differences out there as time goes on.
Also, the S is a special car. Most of the time, even when it is finally time to move on and sell it, people are torn about letting it go. So unless they really need to sell it they are going to be slow about it. Its not going to be the typical commodity car buying process.

A I look at pricing around the country compared to California, I'm finding this to be very true.
Also, I parted with my last one to pay for my wife's engagement ring and my bar exam expenses . . . it wasn't an easy choice.

No claims, insured my 08 for 25k at a yearly cost of $700. 2000 mile limit per year
