I do not understand the physics involved in this kind of accident. No car will just spin for no reason while traveling in a straight line, even if you shift hard enough to spin the back tires. Where did the force vector that caused the rotation come from? I'd find it easier to believe that a pink elephant stepped on the car.

I'm glad nobody was hurt, and want to understand what happened. The story here makes it sound like the S2000 has a mind of its own. Tell me it ain't so.

So if there is raining with oil and gravel on the road, traction will be a real issue. Even at 35MPH you can still easily hydroplane. My opinion from the limited information here. Road conditions were bad already, shifting caused the weight of the car to go forward, loosening the rear tires. After he shifted he applied the gas and one tire gripped before the other, causing a spin around the axis. Given the road condiditons recovery would have been difficult.

It ain't so. some people are just in denial. I should note that rarely, if ever, has anyone who posted about wrapping their car around pole or a tree been someone who posts regularly in the racing and competition forum. The inference is that they really don't know how to drive this car. For example, a lady on the first page said it's easy to spin this car around. This car can be spun but it's only "easy" for people who aren't familiar with driving a quality RWD sports car.

I agree the the root cause of this is two fold, driving too fast for conditions and driver inexperience.

One of the morals of the story is that the S-02 in not the best tire for wet traction, if it's raining take extra precaution....

This might apply in heavy rain, especially on a highway. However, the S02 is fine in local driving at the speeds this poster said he was going. I used S02's on the street for almost 4 years and never crashed. Now I use shaved Toyo RA1's on the street (and the track), which are a much worse street tire than fully treaded S02's. When do all these crashes that drive all of our insurance rates up stop being a tire or car issue and start being a driver issue?
