Are S2K owners hypocrits?
The OP is not asking for a definition of what is "rice". My statement is a generality that is answering his question of "why".....
If you look at the S2000 in Japan, there are many companies that have built the car with the widebody kits and wings and have established themselves in the market. ASM/J's/Mugen/Spoon etc.
S owners that like to emulate those creations by spending their $$ to do so is their option.
"Rice" can not be defined on a forum with thousands of opinions of what it means. However the term comes from non proven aftermarket parts that are the cost effective solution to "look" like something from a high performance nature. If you are actually buying the parts that the aftermarket companies are copying, essentially if you had the money, you could build a track worthy monster.
Modding is for "show" and for "go". You can't convince the "go" people that flashy looks isn't rice. People mod to create something that is personalized. Even though you may have many S's with the same mods at a "Meet". On the street, the car will stand out as one of a kind.
Before the 1999-2000 when the S came out, Civics had already established themselves and the "rice" haven of front wheel drive cars. There are several generations of Civics from $500 - $28,000 that are modded. When someone trys to mod a 1980's Civic or even early 90's Civic with low end aftermarket parts, it's hard for the car to shake the "rice" badge.
The 2 flaws with modding are that "looks" are subjective. Not everyone will like your "Style". Modding is also an aquired "art" if you will. Most car enthusiast don't just step into the scene and build a clean car. They "learn" how to mod over years of experience and as they come up through years of ownership of different cars.
Demographics again for the Civic means younger owners who are learning the art...... as you get more experience, the $$ is more available and the modding becomes more cleaner. Still understanding that it's still subjective as to what looks good.
There are the anomolies such as the "rich" kid who ruins the look of a Ferrari or P-car.
Bottom line, it's your car, who cares if it's rice. Who cares if you track it. I'm just giving you an opinion as to why Civics get a harder rap than the S.

The ASM s2k is a wonderful machine. Although if I saw this thing at a drive through at mcdonalds id be real confused...
Some of you are missing the point. I know all of these aero parts are functional for the track. But on a daily driver? I group those people that excessively mod the exterior of the s2k with the same people that do it to any other car.
Like I said if I saw one of those transformer looking s2ks at the track I wouldnt think anything of it because I know he bought all of those things for performance and hes putting them to use and would be a couple seconds faster than my stock bodied s2k. As for all those people who put huge wings and extreme body kits on their car because they think it looks nice.... then thats rice.
As for the fart cannon exhaust somebody mentioned. A single exhaust sounds 10 times better on an s2k than on a civic. You never hear an s2k sounding like a weedwacker.
Another comparison somebody made about comparing a 35,000 dollar sports car to a 8000 used car is kind of unfair to the civic considering you could get used s2ks for about 12,000 nowadays and civics can go higher than that. The S2K is an awesome machine. But why are people comparing it to such high end cars that are made for nothing more but to be fast?

"Nowadays" and the past are different. Civics have been around a LONG time.
I'll say it again, modding can be for "show" or for "go". Some people "show" their cars. Others track them. Majority use as a DD.
If you're set on hating on that...then what's your point? You asked the question and it's been answered.
With your philosophy, I guess If if I own a pair of Air Jordans I'm "rice" because I don't play professional ball. Or if I use a Lotus Exige as a DD and roll it through the drive through I'm rice.
"high end" is "high end"... it's not crap quality. Call it what you want. However, there are low end parts also available for the S, but there are a gazillion more low end parts for a Civic.
Based on your comments....this thread is pointless...
