What about the area around the Roof and Hazard buttons? The finish in that area looks different in my MY02 than the photo of FormerH22a4's. Anyone removed the finish in this area?

I did this mod and it is awesome!!! Here are the step by step instructions I've prepared. Does anybody want to put it into the FAQ for me?

__________

You'll need a small bottle of rubbing alcohol (can get it at the supermarket) - people sometimes use it for cleaning their ears if they have pierced ears. You'll also need an old t-shirt., and a phillips head screwdriver.

---------------------------------------------------
I found this extra step invaluable in getting agreat job:

Take off the gear lever. Take off your center console. It has clips to hold it down. Grab an adge and simply gently pull upwards. I think there are 6 clips. They'll take a bit of coaxing, but the console will come off. Then unclip the two buttons (roof and hazard switches). Don't try disasseblling the shift boot from the console - it's plastic welded on and doesn't need to be removed. By the way, you could take the coating off the trim piece with it still on the car though, but I took mine off to make it easier to manipulate.
----------------------------------------------------

Wet a small portion of the towel/tshirt with the alcohol and simply rub the panel applying pressure to the towel/tshirt as you do, being careful not to get the alcohol or t-shirt on the plastic surrounding the trim piece you are taking the paint off. (Hint: You can use your fingernail under the t-shirt to get into the edges!)

At first, nothing will happen. But, keep rubbing whilst you apply pressure and then you will see the fruits of your labor. You just repeat the process all away around the panel. Don't forget the extreme edges where the trim panel meets the center console. This will make it a clean job. I undid the black screws underneath the console so I could 'push up' the trip piece a little to get into those edges.

All in all, it took about 30 mins. It's a very simple job and you'll love the results. After you've reinstalled the console, give the newly revealed trim piece a light buff with a clean t-shirt to remove any fingerprints.

Hope this helps!!

Cheers,

OK, I've put it onto the FAQ forum. The powers that be will put it where it needs to go when they get to it.
