shifter plate peeling
Hmm. How do they get a chrome finish on plastic? Is it some kind of metallized deposit (in which case that would come off too, eventually.) Been away from organic chemistry a long time, so I'm curious.

woah that looks really good. i scratched up that plate installing my boot so i think im gonna have to do that now. damn it, now i have to take that plate off again. that was the hardest thing to do for me. seriously took me like 20 mins just to remove the damn thing from the larger plastic portion. but once its off everything else after is simple to do.
I did this last night and it took me about 2 hours... most of which was spent looking for tools and cleaning products (I just moved). But after popping off the center console, the hardest part was cutting away the melted/molded plastic bits on the underside...
Now all I can say is LOOKS GREAT! I love it. Thanks to Rick for the instructions (albeit for his boot) and for The Captain for doing this (I'd started to see peeling and thought about finishing it up, but...)
Excellent!
BTW, I used some Meguiars "Fine Cut Cleaner" rotary buffer compound to clean off the finish. Worked much better than the alcohol, presumably because it has some fine abrasives in it.
