It has been done before . The bottom face of the knob is perpendicular to the hole. Use a vice and a drill press. You need to indicate the bottom surface in so the drill will go in straight. You need to leave about .050 wall and countersink the bottom of the knob. You can drop it about 7/16" which is a little less then the Voodoo.

Given the length of the threaded portion of the gear shift stem a countersink beyond a certain point is a waste of time. The countersink merely compensates for the deeper thread by allowing you to scew the knob all the way down until the end of the thread is reached. It is the combination of the countersink and the deeper thread and a shorter knob that makes for a nice short throw.

i.e. If a knob is sitting .75" lower on the shift stem it is not neccessarily countersunk by .75".

Look, I don't really care...lol. All I care about is plug and play, since I've not the tools for the job. If anyone thinks they can make the knob shorter by about an inch and all I have to do is screw it on, let me know and I'll pay you to do it for me.

I just shorten my knob!
First, cut off shifter screw about 1/2".
Second, drill out about 1/2" from inside the knob.
Overall reduction of a 1".
You could adjust how much you tap into the knob to align the top of the knob.
Took about 15 min.

Man, I need some tools...like a drill press. Of course I'd have to have a tool room first, and before that comes a garage, and before the garage comes the house, oh the hell with it ...lol.
