tried "heel- toe" for the first time...
Sixteen years ago we sold a '77 911S. I always thought that heel-toe downshifting in that was next-to-impossible with the pedals going into the floor (a la old Volkswagons). After trying to learn for a while I finally gave up.
Since then I haven't really owned anything in which it made a hill-of-beans worth of difference.
Till now.
Back to school!

It simply takes practice and do whatever is easiest. I use the outside of my foot to blip the throttle and brake with the ball fo my foot. The floor mounted gas pedal in Bimmers make this real easy.
As for left foot braking, you really only use this for small adjustments to the balance of the car. You don't really do all your braking with the left foot. I don't do it yet but every really good driver I know does some left foot braking. I need to practice before I try it on the track. For example, in a real fast sweeper, like Riverside at Buttonwillow, you can enter staying on the throttle and just touching the brake with the left foot to get some grip in the front for turn in. It is not something you try for the first time on the track.
