TSB for Clutch just completed...

I'm glad that your clutch wasn't too bad, because mine was so loud that it was driving me crazy. The sound never went away. It go so loud during a group drive that I thought that I had blown the engine.
The clutch is covered by a TSB (technical service bulletin) which is a notice that American Honda Motors sends to it's dealer network to inform them about known problems and how to repair them. This is not a recall and the dealers do not have to perform this repair. Any number of people have had the dealer tell them no. And some of them have had the dealer tell them that they had to pay for the clutch replacement due to driver abuse. This repair is not a given, it depends on the dealer.
Hope that this helps,
Bob

Intrepid175, it sounds like you have gotten some winners. Were they all Chrysler products? BTW, my wife has a MY2001 Odyssey EX and we both love it. Her's just turned 18,000 and I got 26.5 mpg driving up to the Tire Rack last Thursday to get my snow tires mounted on my second set ot wheels. I had them in the back of the Odyssey.
While I was up there, I got to meet Jim and guess what he told me? He has a new Odyssey on order for his family. Small world isn't it? He ordered a gold EX like we have. I haven't had the first problem with my wife's.
Hopefully, your S2000 will be a lot better than your Chryslers have been.

I've bought six new cars in my time. The first was the Plymouth I mentioned. It was a Valient with a 318 V8 and it wiped all the main and rod bearing aft of the middle main bearing. In all fairness, in 3.5 years and almost 40k miles, that was the only significant repair it ever needed. It just always got to me a little, you know? I mean, a "crankshaft"? The car with the chronic A/C problems was an '88 Chrysler Le Baron convertible. Running wise, it was always reliable but considering other problems, I was sure glad I'd bought the extended warrantee plan. Chrysler lost their arse on that one.
The leaking power steering and the torque converter replacement was a '94 Ford T-Bird. To date, that was the best driving car I've ever owned. I don't have an S2000 yet, still working on that part.
The others are my current Odyssey, a '79 Datsun King Cab pickup which saw the dealer one time for a minor carb adjustment right after I took delivery and never again in the six years and 80k miles I drove it, and a '85 Plymouth Voyager minivan. That one took a carb overhaul and some minor A/C work early in it's warrantee cycle and was pretty much trouble free after that for 3.5 years and 45k miles.
I've generally been a pro American manufacturer in my life but I have no problems with non American companies. I've had, in recent years, some rather "spirited"
conversations with a dear friend of mine regarding the merits of American autos vs their foriegn counterparts. When I finally took stock of the issues I've had with previous vehicles I've owned, I had to admit that the Japanese vehicles I've owned did "way" better than the Chrysler and Ford unit's I've owned. It's easy to forget and/or deny the frustration several years after the fact.
I've been lucky in that none of these cars ever left me stranded. They ran and drove well, got reasonably good fuel mileage for what they were. The simple fact is, the Japanese vehicles, a Datson (Nissan) and my current Honda (so far!
) have done considerably better than their American counterparts. Right now, I can't think of any domestic vehicle that grabs my attention with the possible exception of the new Ford T-Bird. I've looked at them and they seem real nice, "but", it's NOT an S2000!
Besides, you can't get a manual transmission in the darn thing and that, to me, is a major defect in and of itself. I don't have an S2k yet. I've got some financial issues to work out first, but I'm having a LOT of fun dreaming about it. It may take a while, but I'll get there! FWIW!

Steve R.
Went to the dealer yesterday and they are going to replace my clutch again under the TSB. They said there is a new updated version that is suppose to take care of the problem.
This will be my second time under this TSB.

My dealer won't do this under warranty because I have 23,500 miles on the car, and they also wanted to charge me $1700 for the clutch job - I am on hold with American Honda right now to let them know.

Well, your still 12,500 miles under the base warrantee mileage limitations. I don't see why that should be an issue since Honda is obviously acknowledging there's a problem. If your S2000 is showing the appropriate symptoms, there shouldn't be a problem. It would be interesting to find out how much Honda is willing to reinburse the dealer for a clutch replacement. I'd bet is significantly lower than $1700. If that's the case, you might try a different dealer, assuming you already haven't.
Good luck,
Steve R.
Well I've given up hope with Santa Monica Honda and I now have an appointment with Miller Honda in Culver City this Friday morning. I'll bring a print-out of TSB 54 with me, just in case, but something tells me they're going to play the wear item card. I haven't mentioned my attempts with Santa Monica, I only told them that there's some "strange grinding noise" when I'm decelerating around 3000-4000 rpms, and that I think there "might be" a TSB for it. We'll see how it goes. Either way, if I do end up getting charged for this, chances are it'll be a lot less than $1700.
I'm also bringing my car into Santa Monica for the third time to fix what I believe is a problem with the MAP sensor. They've tried to remedy this twice with a replacement of all 4 sparks plugs, and the 2nd time with an oil change.
Both times the symptoms were felt again no more than a few minutes after driving off of the lot.
What a hassle.
