In order of priority:

1. It's a convertible.
2. It's a Honda (i.e. relatively cheap sticker price and maintenance costs, reasonable gas mileage, reliability, etc.)
3. It's a performance car that would be fun to take to the track a few times a year.

Other cars do okay on 1 and 3, but not so well on 2 (e.g. Boxster S).

Hint: Go rent "The Fast and the Furious"

I saw the concept S2000 at the Chicago Auto Show in 1998. I stood and watched the car for about 5-6 times longer than any car I have ever seen at the auto show.

I had to ask the sales guy about the car. I assumed it was Honda's version of the miata. I was BLOWN away by what the guy was telling me. 240 HP!? 9,000RPM!? LSD!? Convertable ONLY!? 6-Speed Manual ONLY!? Power top, abs, leather interior, and for about $30 grand!?

My jaw hit the floor and I was schemeing for a way to get one for YEARS. In 2003 I could finally afford one (and a decent winter car) and I got one.

Over all I am glad I did not get an early one. I am glad I have the glass window, and less of the common problems. I am also glad I got one before the change to the 2.2L.

I like exotic cars. I like cars that are unique, interesting, special. The S2000 is the only car (without a rotory motor) that ever came with a 9,000RPM redline. It's only available in a 'vert with the 6-speed. it's hard-core, and I will never get rid of it.

This my second S2000. I was a die hard nissan man and swore I'd never own a Honda.

Nissan was acting stupid when I said I wanted change the colour of my pre-order 2003 350Z ,then multiple dealership screw-ups on my modded Z Twinturbo also had a Spec V at the same time that they would never call to tell me when it was ready after being serviced. So after leaving the Nissan dealership angry again the Honda dealership on the same lot was clearing out MY02's and I said " Let's give Honda a shot". All I can say now is Great car, Great service and I luv my S2K

I too said I would NEVER own a Honda. I was a die-hard Mitsu/DSM fan but I test-drove an S2k and decided to sell all my DSM stuff, stop looking at EVO's, and buy a car that handles great and is always fun to drive.

Well, I was riding around looking for cars for my g/f and saw an S in the showroom. Personally I wouldn't have been caught dead at a Honda dealership at the time, but instantly fell in love with the little convertable. So about a year later I was at a Toyota dealership to see a friend that worked there at the time and they had a yellow S in the used lot there, so I got my friend to get the key and took it for a spin, 2 months later (had to order one) I had a new one in my driveway.

I'll continue to enjoy that at least 3/4 of the public doesn't have a clue as to WhAT the car IS.

And the simply ritual of filling up always gets a story.
