I think investing $250 in a Passport 8500 is a good decision. I had no regrets about getting the V1 for $440 (including the extra display that I never use) but this is one case where second best is also excellent.

There were three things that led me to the Passport 8500.

(1) Higher sensitivity for X band was not useful to me since rarely X is used around here.

(2) Expert Mode Display is very useful.

(3) (Probably the most important, but less thought about, normally)...the 8500 has a speaker-out jack and for an additional (I think) $29.95, I got the powered, 2 inch (cubed) speaker. That little thing can over power my radio, engine, and wind sounds at any speed.
