Just had mine replaced with the generic safelite glass. Looks fine to me and saved a crap ton off the OE glass prices.

Not close at all really. Often opposing traffic does it. My S windscreen took a huge hit from a rock a truck kicked up that was opposite direction on a 2 lane road. It left the classic cone shaped bullseye. Fortunately I did not try to do it myself (making professional repair impossible) and had a free Safelite visit; they made it virtually invisible. They had time to kill so the guy left the vacuum pump going for about 15 minutes letting the resin completely fill the crack.

I have only 57K on my car but there were a bunch of small pits and hard water etchings that did not respond to cleaning and vinegar. I used 3M glass polish ($65 on Amazon for liter bottle) and my Porter Cable DA with Chemical Guys pads and did several round on the glass to polish everything out. What a difference! Keeping the old windshield.

now that I think of it I do seem to have more rocks flung at me from opposing traffic, from semi's or just big obnoxious trucks with big tires. I got a chip on my old civic that had a new windshield installed, but usually it's just dirt and debris in my face(windows down or top down)

We have quite a bit of traffic, sitting at number 6 in city size cars, trucks, and tractor trailers that throw up rocks daily. You don't have to be very close at all for a pebble to come flying at your windshield. The S sits low and picks up flying debris easily. If not repaired, a simple bump can cause a "star" to crack in one or several directions. I've found an installer who has worked on S2ks, so I've lined him up to use the same "Honda" glass without the Honda logo.
