Default cams

I know this has been brought up many times before i ran a few searches and still have a few questions. Has BC worked out the problems with the cams? Can I run a spoon head gasket with the cams? I plan on running them in a N/A application.

Sorry to bring it up but Im looking for some cams.

I haven't seen anyone mention them here in a while. I'd recommend you go to the source (Brian Crower).

How "big" a cam do you want? With or without VTEC? Street or race? I think TODA probably does a pretty good job, but I have no personal experience. Their own people admit that even their VTEC "killer" cams (which I can no longer find on their web site) are pretty much done making power by about 9500 rpm. And 8500 and up is where these motors start to boogie if you can keep them supplied with enough (non turbo) air.

I get mine (no VTEC) from Cam Motion in Baton Rouge, LA. I think Brian C. does too, but that's just a guess. But it's no Plug and Play arrangement. You have to grind the exhaust rockers to clear the lobes as they come down off the rollers. BTW even though I have some TODA adjustable cam gears I am running the stock gears on my Cam Motions with plenty of piston/valve and valve/valve clearance. On the other hand I only got about 15 minutes on the motor when it came apart (I think the problem was elsewhere... see my other ??? post).

BTW be carefull with your cams. Do not confuse the gears as there is an Exhaust gear and an Intake gear and they don't seem to be marked as such like the cams are.

And keep the shiny side up.

All the best,

Jim

wasn't there a recent debacle about BC cams and how they don't make any power in our cars, lots of guys posted power losses and a vendor on here issued refunds because of it

That's not entirely true. The first set of Toda cams that I had installed made 5-8hp from about 4500RPM to redline.

Unless you are trying to build the motor to rev out further, stock cams should be fine.

I think some people overlook the fact that vtec gives you a pretty wild cam up top from the factory. Especially on the s2k as compared to an ex civic for example. So the gains from an aftermarket cam are going to be dissapointing, like most bolt ons for the s2k.

I'm guessing that the reason the after amrket cams may not make HP is they want to retain the VTEC, a killer system for the street where life still demands that you parallel park now and then, but a real PITA if you want to make some serious power. All that excess VTEC weight flopping around at the end of the cam followers really does nothing to add performance and can actually cost you valuable RPM's what with the extra 3rd follower and the internal piston and spring assemblies.

We were making 280+ RWHP NA on gas with a set of cams, some porting (that didn't really add that much) and individual throttle bodies and a really crappy tune. That was up from 245 RWHP from a stock motor with bigger injectors and an after market ECU.

So if you still want to think that after market cams don't do much, what do you say we race? $100 to the winner?
