Thumbs up CEL, P1456. Can't be just the gas cap.

I rarely drive my car, it's a garage queen, meet car and an occasional track b!tch. That said, in August returning from a Tech Day meet I filled up my car at full service gas station, so maybe I did have a loose gas cap (or bad fuel).

Going to dinner weeks later the car start acting up while trying to accelerate and sure enuf the CEL illuminates. Read the codes, P1456, clear the code and remove and re-tighten the gas cap.

Just this Sat. same thing, right around the VTEC cross-over point the car starts sputtering and hesitating, no CEL yet. Get the car home, pull codes P1456. I've checked the oil level and it looks good. Swapped my gas cap with the one from my wifes MDX (shh) and haven't drivien the car since. Take note, I am still on that same tank of gas.

Can a bad gas cap really make the car run so poorly or at least make the ECM run a "safe mode" or is bad fuel the possible culprit?

Ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I've had my CEL trigger from a loose gas cap several times and it has NEVER caused the car to perform any differently

I'd suspect bad fuel before I suspect the gas cap.

I have forgotten what the definition is of this code, since there are 2 tank related, one for the tank and one for the neck I believe. I had a tank code and I reset it, only to come back a little while after, then reset it and the code came back...so I left it. A little time later on it went away by itself. I did add a little oil to the rubber seal on the gas cap when it first went appeared, it seemed to help but I dont know its a weird one. No drivability problems noted either. possible though to affect mileage if the tank is not recovering the gases properly.
